Bag End cabs

Well, if anyone has checked the classifieds lately, I've decided to sell my S12's. For the music I play and the rest of my gear, I wanted a smoother sounding setup. Not that my bands were complaining, I'm just felt like trying other cabs. The typical obsessive gear head thing. :hmm:

In that vein, I have too many cabs in my house right now, so I want to get rid of these. Take a look at the ad and feel free to make an offer.

Thanks,
M

I'm currently using two S12's and I'm pleased with them. At low volumes or with one cab, I want to boost the bass a bit...but once I do that, I'm golden. I don't miss the tweeter, but I haven't used tweeters for a couple of years. I've played both electric and upright through them (well, upright through 1).

To my ears, my rig sounds pretty different from some of the Epi cabs I've played through, which were "wider" and "sweeter" sounding but didn't have the same "punch" and "definition" (yes, I know how vague these terms can be...).

I have a couple Bag End cabinets: an S15B-C and a Q10X-D. The Q10X-D is a 4x10 that is pretty shallow, although it certainly kicks out plenty of bass (it's ported on the back). It's been discontinued now; the current BE 4x10 is the Q10BX-D (I believe), which is deeper, close to 2 feet. I shudder to think what moving one of those around would entail, because the shallow version is already a staggeringly heavy cabinet. But sounds great.

The S15B-C, on the other hand, is actually lighter than it looks like it ought to be. It's the bigger 1x15 cabinet, deep with a port that can be opened or closed. I don't know what it actually weighs, but when I first picked it up I was surprised by how relatively light it was. It's a big cabinet so as I said, that's relative, but I don't mind moving it around at all.

I used to have a D15B-B, which was a 2x15 that was basically two S15B cabs in one big box. It was a little too big for me to move around easily, but, I have never heard a more impressive sounding cabinet.

A note on BE nomenclature: The first letter is the number of drivers (S=single, D=double, Q=quad). Then the number for driver size. If the cabinet has special features, there will be another letter then: B or L for deeper cabinets, and X for the coaxial tweeter. Then there's a hyphen, and the letter after the hyphen indicates the covering or finish: D=deep red carpet, C=carpet (black), and B=natural oiled birch. This can get a little confusing because a S15B is a different cabinet from an S15-B.

Here is my line up of Bag End cabs

2 ea S 15D cabs ( $600 for the pair)
2 ea TA 1200B PA Cabinets ( ebay $250.00 each:hyper:)
2 Ea Ta 2000 CF Monitors( ebay $300.00 ea:hyper:)
1 Ea - 2 x 12 Bag End (Sam Ash $150.00)

I also coordianted a band purchase for a pair of TA 5000 PA cabs..they cost new - $500.00 each

I bring the PA to many of my shows and I can fit the both
S 15d cabs, the two TA 1200B PA Cabs and one of the monitors in the back of my truck without killing my back.

The PA / monitor system is crystal clear and the TA 1200b's crank out some high quality sounds for their size. The S 15D cover most of my shows..

I have never had any problems with any of the BE gear and there are some good values in the used market ..as you can see by the prices I paid for the BE stuff I use. its so well made that the used market usually works out real well....

The 4 x 10 cab that they make is great but way too heavy..100lbs +..but if you have a road crew..Its the way to go..

As stated there is a boat load of great gear to choose from but this is a brand that has been consistently built with very high quality standards over the years and they continue to do so...I am curious why they have not entered the Neo market ... maybe they know something ??

Good luck with your choices

I actually emailed Bag End a few weeks ago and they mentioned Steve's was a dealer but I've never seen any BE cabs there.

If AVM's a dealer, even though they only show the 18", they could probably order whatever you wanted.

I'm currently looking at a used D10xd to pair with my YBA-200 head. Tried the combo in-store and it sounded pretty good. My only concern was that the master on the amp was at around 4.5 and the sound wasn't as loud as my brain imagined it should be...

Which store did you try this combo at?

I work close to Steve's, so next time I'm in there I'll ask the Bass guy, he's seen me there a few times buying stuff. I've never seen a BE cab there either.

well sorry i should still make a mega thread huh?

i dug up this reply of mine from an old thread a long time ago

some searches would pick up some good descriptions, but here goes.

FWIW, I'm not affiliated with bag end of any of its dealers. I also don't think that bag end is "the best" meaning that i think there are probably 10-20 other brands of cabs out there that are just as good, but just sound different. I would use any number of them w/o hesitation.

anyhow, I've been lucky enough to do extensive comparison of BE cabs with several other cabs, both on gigs and in stores.

The S15 is "the" bag end cab. (note: in this post i'll refrain from using the last letter designation of the cabs which is found after the "-". all that refers to is if the cab is in black carpet "C", birch "B", or deep red carpet "D"). The S15 isn't as deep sounding as a lot of other 15" cabs, but it does a great job with upper partials and sounds tighter as a result. The S15 has a very punchy midrange and more of an "old school" vibe. It's probably one of the most articulate 15" cabs around, and is my choice for a standalone. The S15X has the coaxial tweeter and the coax sounds very nice in all the cabs it comes with. Not too harsh, but very "airy". The 15" speaker is also available in a huge cab called the S15B, which has insane bass response and is a direct descendant of the 15" cabs used by phil lesh in the 1974 "wall of sound". There is also another cab called the S15L (used to be the S15cus) that is exactly the same exterior dimensions of the D10B 210 cab. It seems to have more lows than the S15, but not quite the midrange clarity.

The S12 is my second favorite cab. I don't like it as a standalone as it is a bit thin on bass response, but it has an amazing and aggressive mid to high mid presence that i've never heard from any other box by BE or any other manufacturer. On top of an S15 (or almost any other cab) it adds an unreal presence to your sound. The 12 is also available in a 212 (D12) and used to be available in a monster 412 cab (Q12)

The 10" BE speakers are all very different. the original D10 and Q10 were in a very shallow box. most of them were made with a coaxial speaker. They are very punchy and articulate, but i still like the midrange on the 15 and 12 better. Today they just make the deeper version of the boxes (D10B and Q10B). These cabs probably have the most bass response of the BE line barring "elf/infra" systems, and the S15B and S18B cabs) the D10X is a great cab, but the mids are more subdued than the 15 and 12. The secret weapon in the 10" cabs is the recently reintroduced S10. A very tiny box. Two of them don't have quite the bass response of my D10B, but they have a sweetness of tone and presence the bigger box can't dupe.

The 18" cabs are very surprising. Both the compact S18 and the huge S18B get deep sounding (the S18B is scary), but both have the most articulate sound i've heard out of an 18". I kid you not when i say you could use the S18B as a standalone cab. The time i heard one i was looking for the 210 bescause it sounded that clear.

man, long post, sorry. :p

anyhow, i generally use an S15 and S12 stack as that's what i've found works best for me.

I have two of the S 15 D cabinets (small cubes) and they work great for me. Sure, they are on the heavy side of things compared to all the super light cabinets that have come out as of late, but they are not as expensive either. Although, since you used Epifani, cost must not be that big of an issue.
By cabinets can get as loud as I need them to with a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0. I use them mostly playing with a big horn band (pep band/marching band), where I need to be compete against really loud players and fill big gymnasiums. They work great and the sound is great too. Very clear, unlike other 15" cabinets. Very warm and sweet tone. One of these days I would like to get the 12" cabinet though, I bet that, on top of a 15", would sound even better, probably a creamier tone.
The cabinets are also small enough that I can fit both of them, with my bass and amp bag, in the trunk of my car.

Not that my bands were complaining, I'm just felt like trying other cabs. The typical obsessive gear head thing. :hmm:

I thought I might be missing something after I sold my S12 and S15 stack when I got back into playing (I took a couple years off)... I ran through some over buzzed and over priced cabs before realizing Bag ENds are ALL I want/need.

Good luck on your search

Scratch that; I'm keeping them. The sound of the cabinets with my Markbass F1 is a bit "boxy" when then head is flat, but once I add a bit of bass boost and a bit of treble boost, I'm there. :) If I want to tone it down a hair, I use the VLE a little.

I gave up on these too soon. They take eq very well, have a small footprint and are pretty loud! :)

the mid sized s15d-l continues to amaze now that it's fully broken in. i added an ampeg style caster tray to it with guitel 4" blue rubber casters (only one small extra hole required) and the schlep is pretty painless for a now 75lbs combined. but OH the tone, i have never heard a better sensibly sized single 15 cab. it truly has it all for me; very deep yet tight, incredibly articulate when you want it to be, and punchy as all get out w/o getting thin. no other cab ime responds better to tone control tweaks. it just sounds right, for lack of a better term, and is the end of the road for me in a single 15.

because their 15's are so efficient i'm thinking of a pair of s15 cubes in the future to mate up with a very rare and unique head; a 50 watt Oliver B200, designed by B15 inventor jess oliver. it has a lot of that amp's vibe plus twice the juice. 8 or 16 ohm, variable mids plus a variable ultra low control, which you can really feel. my gut tells me this rig will be incredible. and will also stack quite nicely; the head is only 19" wide. with 2 cabs at 104db total efficiency it'll make for a mini rig of doom with a greasy late 60's lo-po tube vibe that you can actually use onstage, yeah!
