If she is a real person or personal relation of yours who is deceased or suffering, that is something else altogether. In that case I'd offer an apology.

I keep the bass out of the bag unless I'm in transit to a gig or rehearsal.

Why you would bring Doris' name up in this Thread is beyond me. Doris is sick, no not physically sick. Mentally and emotionally challenged, yes, but why bring up Doris' name in this thread? I just don't understand that at all.

I kept a small room in another city where I was travelling regularly for a few months. I had just enough space for a double bed, desk, and wardrobe, with just enough floor to practice. Because it was an attic, the walls didn't allow me to stand the bass up except in the middle, so the bass lived in the bed. I kept the case on, lest I get any funny ideas...

I'm amazed so many choose a stand or a corner, which seems dangerous to me. Is there something undesirable about keeping it on its side that I don't know about that makes a stand a better option?

I think the bass lying on its side is far more prone to danger than on a sturdy stand in the corner. That seems true whether or not you have others in your house or not. Careful as I am, I'm more likely to bump the bass or drop something on it if it is lying on the floor than if it's in a stand.

Leaning the bass (bridge facing in) into a corner, resting on the shoulders, seems to me to be the safest way to keep the bass while you're not playing. There is no way for the bass to fall, unless there is a catastrophic earthquake or something. Gravity pulls it into the corner and to the floor, so it can't move down any more or side to side.

Corners all the way.. I heard laying a bass on its side for a long time puts extra stress on the ribs (not to mention what others have already said about bumping into it). Besides, leaning the bass into a corner saves space.

I leave all my instruments out...guitars hang on the wall, piano stays out, and the bass stays out. If put 'em in a case or bag, I can't walk by and play for 5 minutes.

I probalby get an extra 30 or 45 minutes of playing each day just in 3-5 minute snippets.

They're meant to be played, not stored.

What he said. I work at home and mine stays on a stand right beside my chair. Any time I have even a minute, I'll pick it up and play a scale or something. Over the course of a year, those minutes really add up!

Edit: My bad... didn't notice this thread was in the double bass forum, but it still applies - keep it near you and fondle it every chance you get.

Thanks for all the responses everybody. Based (bassed?) on the comments, I will continue to store my bass unbagged, on the stand. Since I dont have pets, kids, etc., sounds like it will be fine.
