Aquabats and Trampled by Turtles come to my mind first. My brother purposely wanted a silly and pretentious "The xxx" name for his band. He went with "The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers". Taken from the book "The Prayers and Tears of Jacques Derrida" by John Caputo and the character Arthur Digby Sellers from The Big Lebowski. They played out of the NC tri-city area and actually had a really great local following. Generally sad bastard music. Runs in the family.

Being a metal head anymore is a really weird thing. I'm a fan and practitioner of the megadeth era of metal, whereas now I tell people I'm in a metal band and they automatically think its a church hating, 666, I'll eat your children in Satan's name, offensive for the sake of being offensive type band. So many metal bands out there now have band names that aren't clever or thought out, just offensive for the sake of it. "Gasp, did you hear what that band calls itself!?" Boom, publicity.

That's a metalhead's cross to bear I suppose. I can't stand it, but it is what it is.

Atreyu. It's a friggin' metalcore band and they took their name from a friggin' children's movie!

As a HUGE fan of the Rainbow Butt Monkeys.. they got really good and decided that with the ridiculous name they were not going to be taken seriously so they changed it to Finger Eleven, got radio play and are now huge. They are great if you have never heard them.

In hit school we were going to call our Metal band, Totem Scrotum, or the Vaginal Blood Farts. Think anyone would have taken us seriously?

I think most band names are stupid. They just get overlooked if a band is popular or you like the band.

I notice a lot o death metal bands being listed. The shock and awe names they use is pretty standard fare for them

Also notice some metalcore bands being named for having silly names, again that is just part of the genre.

I used to think it was just a funny name and then someone enlightened me as to its meaning. The butthole part refers to the hole in an inner tube and a butthole surfer is one who tubes down a river with their butt inserted into said inner tube. I kinda like it.
