"Band Wars"

My band got that once. The drummer of some Emo band that played before us in a battle of the bands sat in the front row and tormented our drummer all night. When we won the competition, he called it a popularity contest, and told us we were p*ssy rock.

Funny. We're the ones who rocked out, you're the ones who played acoustic guitars and cried on stage.

Thankfully, the band replaced him eventually (because of his attitude), and we often play shows with the "new" version of the band. Not only are they much better without him, attitude wise, but they have started to shy away from their emo roots, and gotten more into punk. Punks not my thing, but at least they arent crying on stage anymore.

I like ska, however watching boys cry is not funny. Unless, of course, they're wearing makeup and it makes them look like their faces are melting... yeah that's pretty funny. What's even funnier is when their band goes through three songs, and then at the end the bass player notices he didn't even have his amp on. (This happened yesterday at our local DOS) I'm supprised that he didn't start crying when he realized it.
That would have been a two for one. meltingface-retardedemokid special.

And, heh, the band that supposedly started the whole "emo" thing, Weezer, is a far cry from what is current day emo. I think Weezer is a great band with really good songwriting. I like Coheed and Cambria too- surprisingly deep lyrics. Thrice may not be the most original sounding band, but they write good lyrics too. I like good ska too. The Aquabats are a great band.

As for the behavior of the band playing peanut gallery...that's very immature, and in the cutthroat world that is the music scene, you DON'T want to make enemies. Maybe these emo kids will eventually grow up and realize that.

Wait you just classified 90% of rock bands ever. :)

I am not into emo and I really don't know any emo bands. Maybe St. Louis just doesn't have many or maybe I just don't realize they are emo. We are cool with all the bands we have run into for the most part though. I can only think of 1 that are really starting to tick me off. They are a total Dave Matthews rip off though no emo.

Honestly, I don't see the point in "band wars". I find that the best music scenes tend to have people collaborating instead of in competition with each other. It's not enough for just the fans to support the local scene, but bands need to as well. When bands support each other, you create a music scene. When they don't then, you have just a bunch of bands in an area.

Whether it's Seattle grunge, hippie rock in San Francisco, or the Glam Metal in LA, history has shown that musicians who supported each other and jammed together created a music scene. When one band makes it big, they tend to bring attention to other musicians in the area and they gain as well. Amazing amounts of synergy is created when one band promotes another, shares fans, jams together, shares venues, collaborate on recordings, and generally sharing whatever resources they can to help another band.

On the flip side...
If music is a pissing competition where bands try to elevate themselves by putting down others, they really aren't improving their band. Their hurting themselves, other bands, and the local music scene in general.

My band was once in a little war due to the fact the the singer of the other band was the former bassist of my band, it esspecially ticked him off that everyone openly stated that I was a better bassist.

Eventually that band got sick of him and kicked him out too, our two bands have gotten along great ever since, it's also kind of funny because a former guitarist of our band sings in their band and people openly state how much better he is than the other guy :D

Ok, maybe I'm a bit slow, but what's emo? I think we might call that something else here in Aus but I'm not sure.

well you guys might call it gay music in austrailia, you may even refer to emo kids there as "wankers." (uneducated guess) its all the kids who couldnt decide whether or not to be goth, glam or punk so they took the self pity of goths, the styles of glam rock and the generally rudimentary musicianship of punk and combined it into another disghusting and worthless subcategory of music. i have one thing to say to all the emo kids out there NOONE CARES THAT YOUR MOTHER DIDNT BREAST FEED YOU GO CRY TO A COUNSELOR NOT AN AUDIENCE. man just listen to your own music thats enough to cry over.

heres what an emo band looks like :bawl: :bawl: :crying: :( :scowl: :rollno: :help: :help: :bawl: :hiding: too bad there isnt a "im going to take sleeping pills and cut poetry into my arms with a razor blade because my dad took my xbox away" smiley

Yet another post from the happiest "ray of sunshine" guy here on TB!

maybe you could invent a forum that isnt overrun by a bunch of idiots asking stupid questions with even more idiotic answers and people quoting eachothers idiotic response to someone quoting someone elses quotes. that would be cool. maybe you could include a self playing bass too. by the way the first idea was in no way referencing your post

The question is why are all these "open minded" musicians so critical of every other band? This seems to be the problem with the "scenes" in all places petty B.S. getting in the way of whats really important ..... The Music I would rather play to the 1 person that is really enjoying him/her self than listen to the tauntings of all the immature people. Lets just have some fun and PLAY :bassist:

You hafta be kidding me. Theres alot of crappy emo bands in STL, I honestly quit goin to little show because of it. Have you heard of a band called Story of the Year? emo/screamo band straight out of STL, and have a ton of dumb little bands that want to be them. I honestly dont like them or emo of any kind. It's kind of because i hate all the dumb trendy kids at school, which explains why i sleep through all my classes. Can't wait for college.

Dave matthews rip off? who are they?

Emo bands and kids get off on the fact that they are "different" and "special", as if anybody really wanted to see them cry like a bitch on stage. And because they get off on being "emo" they put down anything that isnt emo.

I think that classifying music is just a bad idea ( not when it comes to rock/jazz/funk/punk), but when people try to get specific, they limit their musical scope (musical scope...i just made that up, but it sounds good...) and just try to be emo. Wasnt the whole idea of the dashboard bs to be individualistic...I dont see how homogenized pussy crying men wearing all black does that. And this is comming from somebody who likes senses fail, thrice, C&C, Finch and the rest (i know you wouldnt classify them all as emo, but like i said, i dont like to label), as well as the stones, zeppelin, RHCP and other good ****.
