Bass Chorus trek...

Seeing some talk about Dimension type chorus pedals lately, thought I'd share these 2 links, providing some insight on why they're different from the other chorus effects.

What Does The BOSS Dimension C ACTUALLY Do? - Stereo Demo - YouTube

Dimension Chorus 7By Sweetwater on Nov 28, 2016, 6:48 PM
An effect developed by Roland and used in the Roland Dimension D chorus, in 1979, and later, in 1985, the effect was made available in the compact BOSS DC-2 Dimension C chorus pedal. Dimension chorus is a unique, lush, “three-dimensional” sounding chorus effect. It used the same bucket brigade device circuits that were popular, but it used two delay lines that were modulated 180-degrees out of phase with each other, which created a “motionless” chorus, opposed to the feeling of motion common among the ensemble chorus effects of the day. It also used a pair of companders to keep the BBDs extremely quiet and noise free. The dimension chorus effect is one of the most emulated modulation effects today.

Just keep in mind that it needs to be run in stereo to take advantage of that effect!

Anyone tried the new Walrus Fundamental Chorus? This has a very short bass segment, with a great Michael Jackson riff, but it seems like a just what you need kind of pedal. All the modes sound great on guitar and I like the short segment of bass tone.

I just picked one up today and so far I’m enjoying it. I was using the detune setting on my harmonist for chorus before but I needed a dedicated chorus to use with the octave on the harmonist. I like that it has a blend but I use a EHX switchblade for blend anyway. Overall it sounds excellent. Still gotta play with it more but initially I like it

I've been really interested in Dimension type pedals for years, I've only ever been able to try them out in stores but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I've been seeing how far I can go layering choruses and flangers.

From what I can gather, the only ones out there are these 3 and none are bass-dedicated, unfortunately. Pity there's not more options, unless someone chimes in with evidence to the contrary ?

- Boss DC-2
- Boss DC-2W
- TC Electronics 3rd Dimension

I have the TC and never tried the Boss units but I'm seeing the DC-2W getting good comments. The TC does cut some low-end, but through the headphones it still comes out great and it'll get a band-rehearsal tryout on the 20th, so I'll see then if it stays. I'm also talking to a referred contact to see if I can have the TC modded for bass.

Digital models of the DC-2 can be more bass friendly as they usually include a mix control. I’ve tried GFI Synesthesia, Boss MD500, and Quad Cortex. I found the Quad Cortex to have the best DC-2 model, but the other 2 are still really good.

I'll add those 3 to the list with the bass demos I found on YT.
Didn't see a bass demo for the MD-500 though ?

I picked up an MXR Stereo Chorus about a month ago and it has to one of the the best chorus pedals I've ever heard. I use it for both guitar and bass and it just sounds so good. Lots of tweakability too.

But for bass, the Bass Filter switch is the real magic. On guitar, the effect is subtle. On bass, it's game changing. It effectively leaves your low end intact and only applies the chorus effect to the high end. The result is sublime. I haven't used many chorus pedals for bass. But I can't imagine anything better than the M134. This is never leaving my board.

That big yellow box was my favorite chorus for a long long time and if I could spare the space (and maybe one day I will), it would still be on my board. One setting I would try on would be flat EQ, intensity and rate at minimum, while trying to find a WIDTH sweet spot.

Tried my bass chorus pedals with my live rig before last night's gig and settled on the Bass Boost Chorus. My live rig goes Bass > pedalboard > ABY > 1 Traynor 400DB each side of the drum riser. Not a real stereo set-up, but my bass tone is pretty good. One of the combos is DI'd out to FOH. The BBC sounded pretty lush and solid, pretty much on the manual's no-modulation settings: mix 11 oc, tone 2oc, speed and depth at minimal, detune on the sharp sign, level at unity (1oc for me), multivoice off.

I'll be using the BBC for a while, but am keeping the others for now.

Yes that’s a nice setting on the Tech21 BBC

Do you have the green or blue version? Someone was asking about this last week…. I’m no use have only used the Green version

I currently own the blue version. I did have the green version years ago and honestly can't tell the difference, but I didn't keep the green version for long and never gigged or recorded with it.

Keeley Seafoam Chorus + came in today. It's my 2nd Keeley pedal, after getting a Compressor Pro last year. No more search for comps since.

I'm giving it a run through on all modes and have the dip switches set on bass/warm, I'm not seeing that move much. All 3 modes sound great through headphones and I will try the live gear later.

For now, favoring the Seafoam mode, with controls set as :
rate 9oc
depth 2 oc
space 10 oc
mix 10oc

With a Thunderbird bass (Goth pickups), I'm getting a tone close to Journey's Don't Stop believin, which is what I'm going for, since its the only song I have chorus on in the current set list (yep, all this banter... for 1 song out of 30).

These settings work well on all 3 modes, but in ADT you have to tweak them up to get a more present flanger effect (for my taste, bringing up the mix knob at noon works well enough). In dual chorus, I bring back the depth knob at noon to get a more solid tone.

Boss also released the DC-3 Digital Dimension
As you can guess from the name, it’s the digital successor of the DC-2. And it doesn’t eat your low end(the DC-2 does eat low end)
I haven’t tested the DC-2W or the TC electronicaketen.

Found an MXR M-134 Stereo Chorus at a very good price on MarketPlace and couldn't resist.

I owned this chorus in the past and always considered it my favorite, but space and powersource requirements unfortunately made it vulnerable to change. The CS-12 supplies the proper voltage and I took the Digitech BSW out (absolutely no use for it, even though I absolutely love this thing), so here we are.

Now going to spend time working the settings AROUND THE WIDTH knob. During this chorus bender, I discovered I liked chorus effects that allowed emphasizing width, like the TC 3rd Dimension. I'll be doing that for the next few weeks, or until I find another chorus I wanna try.

Current board, with sidelined chorus pedals.
