BASS PLAYER MAG HAS FAILED ME!!

BP has gotten to be a WAY better mag than it used to be. I like the little snippets of info and side-bars on each page and the short overview of this or that bassist. one thing that differentiates bassists from all other musicians is the sense of community and the desire to treat each other as brothers and sisters of the lowend, instead of competition for ability (always exceptions to every rule, but for the most part, bassists are actually cool).

i love hearing about people who are in those gigs you would think of. and for those of you who love to knock and mock pop music, stop for a second, forget who is singing or what they are saying...in fact, tune the vocals out...listen to the music or grooves in the background. listen harder...listen even harder...then understand why it is genius and why it makes people millions of dollars.

you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. try not to let image dictate your life...you'll be a lot better off and a lot happier. enjoying life without worry is a good thing. it's fun to be real, way better than cymbalta (or so i'd imagine).

Greg Garbowsky. I read the article and nothing in it told me he was anything special. I guess he was just in the right place at the right time because how he got the gig is very vauge. Just says he auditioned at 18 and got it. I guess I can't wait til next month and they'll have the bassist for hannah montana.

The way I see it, Good for him.

Some would say he's a "sellout" but think wouldn't you sign the dotted line for the chance to have some sense of job security or a really good paycheck playing what ever style of music the job requires. I sure would.

Is he the greatest bassist ever, probably not. Does he earn a living (a really good one I'd bet) playing the instrument he loves, you bet he does.

Im not sure..sure it would be great to play and get paid like he does,but I know I definitely wouldnt enjoy myself playing that style of music,and having to listen/play it over and over and over again. What's the point of making a living playing music if you're not enjoying it? Not to say he doesn't but for the people saying they'd take the job no second thoughts.

I read the article ... thought it was pretty good, to the point, quick mini-interview. I actually learned something ... I hadn't a clue that the Jonas Brothers actually traveled around in a van, playing clubs, and were even dropped from their label. I always thought they were some Disney built group. I'm not even close to being a Jonas fan ... but give Greg a break, it's a great gig. Just because he plays with the Jonas Brothers, doesn't mean he's a bad bass player ... or someone who doesn't deserve any respect as a bassist!

Heck, he got to play with Stevie Wonder! That's HUGE! Being able to play bass behind a legend, is something that the prodominant number of "pro" bassists will never achieve ... get some perspective! :rollno:


BTW ... as far as BP mag is concerned ... I look forward to getting it. IT's not the greatest, or even as good as it was just a short time ago; but at least it a bass mag ... it's not like there's a lot of them. Be glad there are still some in existence.

I guess thats why I'm not and never will be a professional musician. Plus music is a hobby for me...a very strong passionate hobby.

+1 I enjoy the magazine for the most part and the only other bass magazine I've ever read until bass guitar magazine dropped off the face of the earth.

I dunno for sure whether it is or not. It would be interesting to put this question to each of our "Ask a Pro" players. I read JMJ's forum regularly, and it sounds like he's turned down some things he didn't care for, for various reasons.

Exactly! If the gig is backing up the Wiggles - you learn the Wiggles catalog. If it's Wayne Newton you learn the tunes he does..... Then you get paid, it's that simple.


Let's examine that 22yo kids options. He could do a national tour in front of thousands of people or or he could stay home and jam in his buddies basement until they get that magical gig that puts him on stage in front some of his friends and 2 guys who just stopped in for a beer and leave half way through the set. There's a tough choice.

As far as BP mag goes, if I learn 1 thing I didn't know before I read it then I haven't wasted my time.....

Some folks need to climb down off their high horse.

+1 all the way. Interesting article. I always chuckle when people dog on a player doing this, but then worship some cat with horrible technique playing in a famous 'band' that is somehow 'more legitimate' in their eyes.

Thus guy will have a gig for a LONG time.
One of the first things MD's look for after they determine that you can play that is, 1) Are you difficult to work with? If he's had the gig for 4 years straight now, then chances are he's not. 2) Can you handle the pressure of touring? Well, he can. 3) Can you handle the rigors of quite possible long rehearsals?? I'd bet that he can because I'm sure the Jonas Bros. put on the exact show every night down to the smallest detail. Which leads me to the next one.....4) Can you remain consistent night after night and NOT attract attention to yourself?? 5) Have you toured the world and not been arrested???:D

The obvious ones are the drinking/drugs/chasing ass issues. Somehow I'll gamble he's not drinking his ass off and parting like Motley Crue....

You walk in to an audition and it's Ricky Minor putting together the band for some new pop group......this guy walks up and so does Jauqo.
This guy has had the Jonas Bros gig for 4 years straight. Toured the world and played in sold out venues in front of 10's of thousands of people every night and nails it each time on a high production level gig. He's young and I'll bet not half bad looking.

Jauqo can play circles around him- killing every night, maybe done some touring here and there. Has a cool cutting edge CD out. Jauqo is a bit older and an ugly S.O.B....(:D)

Hmm.........I think Ricky Minor's choice isn't THAT hard in this case.


(for the record, I don't know Jauqo's full gig history, just using a name as an example. Love the guy- consider him a friend But I still think you're ugly J!!! LOL!!!)
