BASS PLAYER MAG HAS FAILED ME!!

You know, the whole "you're jealous...you wish you could have a gig like that...bassist x has so much more talent than you wish you had..."thing is getting old. Can't anybody show some criticism or sarcasm without getting lynched? Here's an idea - try having an original thought instead of mimicking what everybody else is saying...

The bass player is pretty decent, IMO.

My youngest son is 7 years old, and on road trips I will use Pandora on my phone, hook up to the stereo and listen to the Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, and his Favorite...Alvin and the Chipmunks (he actually informed me that a Bob Marley song I was listening to the other day was done by Alvin and the Chipmunks and asked me to turn it up).

I believe lyrics can and do shape young minds, so I'd rather he not listen to alot of stuff that's out there, just because of lyrics.

While in general I hate that Disney has become like Microsoft and trying to control every little aspect of our life, I am grateful to have music available specifically for kids with positive messages made just for them.

Who cares if I don't think it's pure genius type of work...like Saturday morning cartoons, coloring books, and most breakfast cereal, that music is not made for me.

I have plenty of other music to choose from.

Have you even heard Jonas Brothers? They do have some cool songs! and I like the fact that it's "rock/pop"... these kids are rocking...
If my children are ever into hip hop, or any other style of music, ok, so be it, but i think jonas brothers puts them closer to rock than other stuff for kids.
And again, they DO have some cool songs. Try to listen without prejudice.

The Jonas Brothers suck, no doubt. And I really would not like to see anything Jonas related in any musician magazine EVER. But the gig would be pretty cool. And the guys are always doing douchie, clumsy stuff like this, so it would probably be a riot.

I don't listen to the Jonas Bros. But I'd be interested to read about who's in their back up band or who played on their records. Where they came from. What their backgrounds are.

I like to read about people in the industry who 'have made it' or 'living the dream'. Makes me feel good that LIVE MUSICIANS are still in demand and working.

FWIW a buddy of mine from college played percussion for Britney Spears during the Onyx Hotel Tour. In college he was a hardcore jazzer. You'd NEVER think he'd be associated in any way to Britney's genre of music. I doubt he was ashamed or embarrassed to put that on his resume or tell his friends or family about it.

The bassist with New Kids On the Block was Michael Dyson. This guy can play. You just have to hear him without the Boy Band. Yes, that was a big paycheck.

It's funny a bunch of your compatriots on this forum play covers in wedding bands or straight up classical music. It's was or is Pop at sometime. 15th century ! Plus these folks are getting paid to not play originals. I'm really into original stuff but can play some mean Stevie Wonder if asked to and I enjoy it and the funds.

Besides Pop is just another form of music that appeals to some people.
Hey, no likey, don't listen to it. If you can harmonize like the Jonas Bros. then do it and bring it. They don't claim to be anything but what you see. If you're in to hard edgy stuff cool, but when you have a tween daughter you'll want the wholesome thing as long as possible.

I was listening to Avril Lavigne's first album. The musicianship is awesome. Why? Seasoned studio players making like indie/pop/corporate punk players.

How could you criticize someone for accepting a high paying gig?
Sure the music IMO blows, but hell, I'd take it in a heart beat! I DO wish I had a gig like that!! LOL!!

If I recall call no one here (except for you really) is getting bent over the idea.
Never said the guy was better than anyone else, nor is anyone jealous.
Talent is subjective BTW.

He happens to have a set of "chops" beyond just his playing that provides him with a VERY well paying gig.

I said this in another thread, but it fits here as well, a professional takes music he doesn't like and he owns it.

I used to have a subscription to BP. I noticed that it kept getting thinner and thinner. If you like to look at ads and product reviews its great. Now I just go to Barnes and Noble and read the entire magazine while the rest of my family browses the books.

I read this article and the one about the Rascal Flats bassists (two bands I don't care for) both seemed like good musicians who have a mix of luck and talent and have something to say. I was as glad to hear their persepective (though like most folks I wish the interviews were more in-depth) as I am of the many other bassists whose style, genre, and point of view are not necessarily the same as my own.

It's like Zen... when you get it, you no longer read the books on it. I rarely read BP... I'd rather play the bass.

, since when is stuff like an in depth interview with Miroslav Vitous or Christian McBride and a full transcription of a Jimmy Johnson bassline for an Allan Holdsworth song not worth anything?

I agree. So BP isn't War and Peace, I still subscribe, and I think it's entirely worth the $1.50 or so a copy that my subscription costs me. Times are tough, and I think that BP is doing the best they can balancing what they have.

I would tour with the Jonas Brothers and when the tour is over, I would just call it a day.

By the way Bass Player let me down a long time ago when they started rotating the same three people over and over again on the cover. Let's see: Victor, Flea, Charlie Haden. Repeat. Throw in Claypool and stir. Then put two on the cover together for variety. They stopped having interesting relatively unknown but huge contributors to our craft. ie. Francois Rabbath. I'm surprised we got as much Hellborg as we did. There was some but not enough Dunn, Prestia, Pappalardi, J.S. Bach, Larry Taylor, Jimmy Garrison Sr., Keter Betts, Ray Brown, Mike Pope or me. (Just Kidding!)

The "Nashville Session Bassists" was a nice feature in Bass Player's golden years.

Weak reviews with little info: How can you test a new Bigarse 7x18" cab exclusively with the $124 ABG that you also tested this month? I'm slightly exaggerating here but if you look you will see this trend. They say how it did or didn't do on this gig. Well you probably wouldn't use those two together under any circumstance.

Who told them being like Guitar Player was a good thing?
It's good to educate our young players about the old heads. The bassists didn't seem to mind. They decide the young players don't want to hear about anyone who's been playing more than three weeks more than they have. Welcome "low expectation" education and entertainment.

i can't say for anyone else, but i've had a lot of original thoughts - two 74 minute cd's worth, in fact - but i have a hard time faulting a guy who was good enough on his instrument to land a serious, hugely-visible gig and to keep it, in the process earning his living.

i play just about the most commercially unviable music ever made (original prog rock) and that's what i've dedicated the past 20+ years of my life pursuing, to the detriment of everything else in my life. bless my wife, she inherited more of a ward than a husband when she married me, but at least she sees something there. heh.

i would -love- to be able to grab a p bass and land a paying gig with a band like this. i would -love- to be able to just put myself out there and land gigs with whoever, like guys like pacman or jimmym or any of the other thousands of guys on this site that pay their mortgage with their bass.

i'm not like that. not good enough, or not smart enough, so i'm stuck playing my own music, usually to an audience of -0- (after a while i even stop listening lol). but that doesn't mean i'm going to slag the guys that can land these kinds of gigs, or be jealous of them because they've found an audience while one eludes me.
