BASS PLAYER MAG HAS FAILED ME!!

I've played MUCH worse gigs - Hell, he gets paid, he gets treated nice - even if the music is weak, he's making his living playing. Who here doesn't want that?

I'm not sure I'd do just anything to make a living playing music. Ultimately I like a steady paycheck and sleeping in my own bed more than 50% of the time, not to mention hanging around with family and friends.

If I could pick up where I left off I'd love to do a good tour some time. Lee Sklar has an interview up on line somewhere where he says he got audited by the IRS because they couldn't believe that somebody who had his high profile gigs wasn't making more money. A gig with the Jonas Brothers won't make you rich (it can help you get a good career going), but it would be a fun experience to do an arena tour and I'd definitely take the gig.

What might be a better mag is a "backline" mag - just bass/drums/percussion - backline guys - - groups, gear - no big puff pieces on headliners or rehashing history - just good info on the guys no one ever hears about.

Rhythm magazine did that. I liked the mag, but it didn't succeed. I liked Musician magazine for the same reason, but it didn't make it either.

If you're unimpressed by that dude being in a mag, I just got the new Modern Drummer (which does, in fact, use printed characters which occasionally resemble words)...there is an article on Nick Jonas, who apparently plays drums in his spare time.


Hundreds, upon hundreds of talented drummers in the world who should all realistically be featured in the magazine, and they give it to Nick Jonas. I got no beef with the kid, but I seriously doubt his "drumming" on Demi Lovato's new album really warrants an story about it.


I take it back, drummers are stupid.

I've got that issue, but just because some dork editor thought it would be a good idea to put it in the mag is not conclusive proof that drummers are stupid.

I don't know why anyone would schlag the Jonas Brothers. They're for the kids. They do have talent, and they're making a KILLING.

Also, any working bassist would be a fool to not jump on that comet tail. I'm sure he's respected among peers. Would it be more honorable to play bass in a backing band for, say, American Idol, or one of the many other 'talent' shows on TV? Those guys kick ass, and probably make great $ as well.

I'm considering that "suck" is very much in the eye of the beholder. Although I don't play for 9-year-olds, I can appreciate that these lads do.

The bassist FOR the Jonas Brothers isn't ONE of the Jonas Brothers and thus should not be hated. Also, since when is stuff like an in depth interview with Miroslav Vitous or Christian McBride and a full transcription of a Jimmy Johnson bassline for an Allan Holdsworth song not worth anything?

I just about every issue (I even have #1 from '88!) & will continue to buy and read it even as it struggles to stay afloat in this weak economy. I love bass!!!!!

Yeah the guy is 22 years old and probably plays in front of more people in one month than most of the idiots that post on here play in their whole career. Must suck to be him.

The people who are ragging on the guy for taking the gig are wrong to do so. It's a job. The people who are ragging on the music are right.

Bass Player is wrong for giving ink to such poor music, regardless of how popular it is.

Bass Player began to cater in part to the LCD and made itself the butt of the jokes you read here about it. The guy gets paid, great. He gets to live his dream, even better. But the gig itself is not worth BP's paperspace.

BP has gotten to be a WAY better mag than it used to be.

You must be kidding. It's about a third the size it used to be. It's now more of a pamphlet than a magazine. Takes me ten minutes to read!

And once you've seen a few issues, it's so repetitive: "It's all about the groove." "The bass should lock in with the drums." Etc.

one thing that differentiates bassists from all other musicians is the sense of community and the desire to treat each other as brothers and sisters of the lowend, instead of competition for ability ....

I have tried to get into BP mag...
As long as they keep showcasing artists I dont care about and use the rest of the space for other uninteresting tidbits, they will get no money from me.
I would love to spend money on a decent bass mag. If BP puts prints a mag I like, I would buy it, but until then.....

Definitely a good bathroom mag. My other fave is Stormwater Magazine.

Just glad we're past those "Sears and Roebucks" days.

I have to go with oboylebass on this one. I know that somebody (I think it was Waynobass??) said that we bassists are the hand that feeds THEM. That's a good point. But "Bass Player" is one of the few publications geared specifically toward us, the bass players. People are always complaining that bass players don't get enough respect. BP magazine has always tried to put out a decent product for us.

We can always argue about what era in BP's history was the best, but at least they're trying to provide us with information on a monthly basis. Does everybody really think it would be better not to HAVE a magazine geared specifically for us? Personally, I hope they weather this economic storm and come back stronger than ever...

Meh, the jonas brothers are shite, but I would sell out and play with them in a heartbeat. As terrible as they are, making a good living playing bass for even a ****** band beats the hell out of an office job.

The magazine is for all bassists, not just "flavor of the month", nor "impressive chops but unknown", nor just for "revered icon", nor just "working schlub doin' crappy gigs", nor just for "esoteric unknowns". So if they give some ink to a working bassist who talks about how he go the gig, then that's educational. A lot better than the claptrap on TB about why Pete Wentz (who is he, anyway?) is so laughable, or why BP Magazine sucks compared to TB.

This guy Greg G. got to play Superstition with Stevie at the Grammys and looked out at the crowd and saw Plant ,Prince, Macca digging the tune, he says Pino is his fav player, whats the hate for? I dont get it.

As far as BP magazine, I like it. I think its cool to DL the songs transcribed and work them out, turns me on to players I dont know and music Im not aware of.
My only gripes are that the "woodshedding" could use more beef and they took out the "Introduce Yourself" article, which I liked. I intend to renew when my suscription runs out.

I cant stand magazines for the most part! They're 98% advertisments. I cant say I never buy one, if theres a particular, specific thing interest / article. I would guess I buy 3-4 mags. a year.

all in all the jonas brothers are not a band so much as a commodity, and the only way there music is made listenable is by having profesional musicians (not some guys in a band) play on their records, the way i see it is he doing his job same way that a truck driver, accountent etc do theirs. the only real difference is hes getting payed to do what we do in between masturbating and watching tv.


i think he wins
