Who gets to decide what is mediocre and what it is not? That in and of itself is pretty subjective.
I understand where you are coming from, I didnt mean to sound like I was attacking anyone here. The quote below is true and should be taken into consideration when someone reads my post. Its just a personal, subjective view. My sincere apologies if I offended you or anyone else my man.
I can completely understand how a professional musician would take this gig, it is part of your living and would no doubt be a money maker. Im a hobby musician so it is a completely different situation, my livelihood doesnt ride on my musical talents, thank god...Id be destitute.

Music is a language!
Often times, we Americans, do not seek to learn foreign languages because it is about communicating with those people. English is our language (i.e. the best) and that other garbage or gobbledeegook is, just that, garbage.
Your life situation at times dictates your desire to take a gig. Some people have kids, others have Anthony Jackson's skill set and therefore can choose their gigs, while others just want to have fun on weekends. While Will Lee's spot on the Letterman Show is not high-brow or high-class, I doubt there are many who would not play the gig for at least a week.
We are producing and sharing music! I cannot force you to appreciate a gamelan & bass combo no more than you can make me appreciate the compositions of Olivier Messian. We must learn to speak and listen in a manner fitting our maturity.

A big +1. I think it's odd that anyone over the age of 20 would even have an opinion on the Jonas Brothers. I have kids and even I can't say I've ever heard their music.
Expecting someone in their 30's to get/like/appreciate The Jonas Brothers would be like expecting a 10 year old to get into Jaco Pastorius.
Having said all this I fall into the "would play bass for them in a heartbeat" camp.
Huh? The OP has got to be young and immature. Getting a high profile touring and recording job like that 22 year old bassist in question would be a fantastic job for a working bassist. I enjoyed reading that one page story. Large crowds, most likely pays well. I have not heard the Jonas Bros tunes but just because it is teen pop does not mean the bass playing has to suck. I am 45 and would LOVE a job like that guys got.
I'm sure I could learn more useful things from this guy than from just about anyone who plays sophisticated solos in highly complex and inventive music.

Man...I would totally play bass for the Jonas Brothers....for one tour, while they are living their righteous lives I'd be getting wasted and seeing if there were any legal babes at the shows...probably a few milfs and cougars there with their daughters...
Then on the last show of the tour I'd get wasted on stage, crank the bass up during the second to last song, turn on all the effects I'd ever had and smack one of them over the head with my bass.
After court fee's I'd probably still have a decent paycheck to show for it. Then I could go lease a Harley-Davidson and add another Ampeg stack to my list of owned gear!

fwiw I have two things to say: 1 I'm a new subscriber to BP and it's not so bad...I feared it would be like all the crap guitar mags I used to subscribe to but had to stop because I simply couldn't read one more article on Satriani, Yingwie, Via etc. nice to see a mag showcasing different kinds of players. good or bad, if that's whats on the "new and happening" of playing, I'm interested in reading about it!

You don't want to do that. Trust me.
you know, there's a lot of folks in this thread claiming their originality and "integrity" would prevent them from gigging for the jonas brothers, or some other similar gig.
to them, i ask, what do you do for a living? who do you work for? are you cranking on the "original cash register"? or flipping "integrity burgers"?
people sell out every day, whether it's "selling their soul to make a record" or selling their soul to make minimum wage, it's called "being a responsible grownup". you're going to either end up "selling out" to some white collar boss and work in a cubicle, or, if you're lucky, you're going to get the rare chance to sign a contract and then have any number of other "sellouts" dictate to you how your original music needs to be.
as for me, i'd take this gig in a -heart beat-. a gig of this size is going to expose you to -all kinds- of folks in the industry, folks that you can sell your self and music to. if you have anything to say musically that is worth a dime, you'll find a way to sell it on a gig like this, regardless of what it is, a lot easier than you will playing a dumpy bar.

I have worked with many people that think they are above certain music. Whatever. If you are a 13 year old, with an i-Tunes account, I seriously doubt you care if we think the Jonas' artistic musical qualities are banal.
I'm not partial to their music, but then again I am in my 40's. I still think the story was an ace as far as the magazine goes. It got some animated discussion going.

No mag will be full of stuff from cover to cover that pleases us all. Given the constraints of staying in business today, IMO BP doies a pretty good job, certainly faaaar better than Bass Guitar Mag, which seems aimed at the lowest common denominator in terms of sophistication (musical, linguistic and cultural). As has been posted, it's an article about a pro who is making it. Kudos to him-and be aware that this was a bit of a risk for BP, because they are not after an audience of 12 yr old girls, and risked the ire of the many who won't bother to read and evaluate the article objectively, but rather see the title and promptly pronounce judgment. Humans......sigh.......
In the interest of full-disclosure, my wife and I sat and watched the 2008 Jonas Brother movie Camp Rock on the Disney Channel over the weekend. I can't tell you why, I guess the Red Sox weren't playing and ... heck I don't know.
But anyway, there was a scene where one of the petulant Jonas brothers was playing acoustic and singing some song to a chick he liked. After he finished, he whined to her that the "record labels won't let him produce his artistic, good music", and he was angry that they made him put out schmaltz. I thought it was very funny coming in the middle of a Disney produced movie.

Some of you guys are taking this waaay too seriously. The JB management is not going to slither in here and offer any of you cavalier fellows any tour dates.

I could just call the management if I wanted to try out for the band.
Any one in this thread that would be willing to play for the Jonas brothers wouldn't be kissing no behind, just because they may be interested in that gig.
That comment about riding ... can be taken as being disrespectful.
A lot of the comments on why some one wouldn't/shouldn't play with the Jonas brother(or similar bands) really comes down to just being ignorant. Especially when the bassist talking all the smack is sitting at home broke or sitting at home about to be homeless.
We all have a choice of what we want to do with a possible professional career as bassist but to be hating on a guy and his gig really is pushing it.
We're part of the Disney Movie Club, and the movie of the month was the JB movie last month. Well, if you don't tell them you don't want the MOTM, they just send it to you. As my oldest daughter is 6, we sent it back. But, yes, I did own the JB movie
BassPlayer has become quite a disappointment the last couple of years. I pick it up now and then for reading material in the bathroom.
