Bass Player Pet Peeves

- when people wont touch your band when they find out there's no singer

- guitar amps which, for all I know, apparently cant go down below 6

- playing with a pick

- when people tell me off for using too much treble and mid

- soundmen who are guitarists, and turn the guitar up higher than the rest of the band

- the weight of my amp

Mine don't spacificly have to do with bass but pretty much any musical instrument....

-people who have no rythem
-people who say that their awesome and they realy arn't
-people who pick up their instrument play a few note then look around the room like they forgot something
-people who think they know everything about bass when they first start
-people who think bringing a whole bands equipment is realy easy
-relitives who make you play for them
-when people think someone's awesome because they can tap
-bassists who never leave the root or the fifth
-this one idiot i knew thought primus and chili peppers had no talent when he cant hold a note or think of rythem or pitch
-people who get onstage with you to play/sing a song and make you look like the worst band ever
-the "emo" bands who don't move and look like they hate their music
-when your singer steals the money for the show you played
-when your singer steals it infront of you

I just noticed I got a little off topic..haha whatever
People who can't spell. :D

Have to admit I share most of not all the pet hates on this thread to some degree or other, but really hate other people touching my basses without some form of proir request.

This really gets me going when some mad-soloing-bluesy-rock guitarist decides he'd pick up your bass for no other reason than to do his mad-soloing-bluesy-rock solos on your bass - or to tell you how to do your bassline (a la mad-soloing-bluesy-rock solo). (guess what I'm saying is "forgetting the bass is a rythem instrument")

I've got a good one, sorry if it has already been posted (18 pages is a lot to read).

If they happen to catch me messing around playing some slap bass, 99% of people will ask me if I know Seinfield. For some reason this makes me mad.

Also singers who DON'T KNOW THE LYRICS. If you are going to sit around while we load/unload/set-up our stuff you should at least know the &^%$ing lyrics. Reading from a page is NOT acceptable.

* "Generally muso's who imitate their idols." I heard that! Once at Elderly, dude with a Jaco knit hat and Jaco dreads grabs a fretless J, plugs into an Acoustic 360 stack that just happened to be there, and proceeds to play nothing but Jaco stuff, note-for-note, harmonic-for-harmonic, for a half an hour. Dude spent the whole time looking around waiting for someone to tell him how amazing he was.

My whole feeling is, don't imitate your heroes, it actually offends them. It's because of guys like this that I avoided playing fretless for a long time. Another thing that gets me me is not only someone mindlessly imitating the way someone plays but even to the extent of having to have the EXACT same gear (right down to the screws on the pickguard) as their idol, obsessive? Try more like PSYCHOTIC!!!!  :rollno: :hmm:

My interest in non-fretted playing has been resparked and I DO NOT sound like Jaco (nor will I try to).

+1 on Seinfeld, that can get really annoying

Limited to things the guitarist in my band does:
o Never practicing and then joking about it at rehearsals
o Never even trying to learn any music theory
o Playing bits from his favorite part of the song, just before we start rehearsing it
o Playing somthing random, (full volume) while I’m tuning or learning a part
o Sarcastically and maliciously playing my bass line on guitar if i'm finding it hard to learn it
o Getting "bored" if "all" he’s doing is chords then the solo
o Thinks a Yamaha Pacifica is something to be really proud of
o Not buying himself any effect pedals even when we need them for the band

He is going to kill me if he ever reads this but what the heck....

that's almost spot on word-for-word of my guitarist. add that my drummer can't make it to even a practice 99% of the time, and my guitarist not being able to make it about 75% of the time.

mine:
-band members who can never make it anywhere
-band members who don't come on time when they can make it
-band members who think playing 1/2 a song is a good practice and then want to do something else
-people who 'upgrade' their amp from a 15W to a 25W and then freak out when their amp starts to cut out
-people who refuse to use anything other than a DS-1 at all times
-band members who can't grasp that all good songs aren't only powerchords/off time drum fills
-RYTHYMISTS who have no sense of RYTHYM
old band:
-people who refuse to let everyone switch instruments every once in a while
-people who complain when you noodle during a lunch break
-people who play root+5th with pointer finger and middle finger:eek:
-people who insist that a band stick only to 1 genre

edit: ohgeez i hope i haven't posted in here before
