Bass Player Pet Peeves

When during a jam, the percussionists (multiple congas, claves, etc.) and I (on my bass of course) get into a groove, and the guitar player comes in with no regard to what we're playing and acts like we should follow him.

I mean "What the H***?"

Or when said guitarist picks up your bass and makes it clear that although he can play the guitar, he has no real sense of rhythm.

1. Music stores that have background music blasting over their speakers. How can I seriously try an instrument when other music is playing?
2. Music stores that only carry 4-string sets or one brand of string.
3. People that ask "Are you the singer?" when I tell them I'm in a band.:rollno:

Music stores where you can't find help when you need it, but the salesmen are all over you when you don't need them.
Not being able to hear myself.
Soundmen who think they are changing the world.
Cigarette smoke odor getting onto equipment. (Can't avoid that)
Bandmembers that put alcohol consumption ahead of music.
Alernative, Grunge pansies with no talent.
Organized religion.
CELL PHONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

people when playing an open string take their hand off the fret board....ugh

Can you think of a better time to make that crucial adjustment to your bass or amp EQ? Or to wipe the hair out of your eyes? Or to scratch that itchy, itchy body part? Open strings are great for when you need to use your fretting hand for something else but don't want to drop a note.

1.The Friend of my female guitarist/wife, who says she will always be at a show, is informed of the playing time a month ahead and reminded, and really wants to hear you.........but purposely shows up exactly the moment you are done so she can walk in and be the center of attention because she thinks she's hot, and can't bear it when everyone guy in the room isn't looking at her.

Then she proceeds to honestly ask, "are you guys done playing?"

I freaking hate that. It's hard enough to get people to come out when you don't have a following and are unknown, but when they are so lame they show up late and could have added another 5-10 people to the audience, people that would likely come to another show if they saw you.... rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You dip**** blonde, we told you 10:00 to 11:30. Yes, lets adjust everything for your time scedule. Thanks for bringing people that really wanted to see us play and then keeping them from hearing us though.

This dip**** was my wifes maid of honor and actually late. *** your best friend doesn't have enough to be nervous about without you being late to her wedding.

2. I'm singing the lead vocal and bass for originals, but people still act as if the guitar player is the song writer. ***, I wrote the song before the guitar was ever in it. I guess because I don't slap/pop or wank and make sure there is a solid foundation for the guitar they think I'm just following. I'm not going to jump upin the middle of a conversation and be like no I did it, but cmon give me a little credit.

3. Mixing the band at practice. Asking the guitar player if she thinks the bass it too loud so that we have the right levels. Then having her say, "I guess," and not commit an opinion in anyway. As long as she can hear guitar right at that moment and thats all she really cares about......... until you get into an actual song then she complains the bass is too much louder than guitar. Ahhhhhhhharraaaaaaaaaaagra, that's what we were trying to sound check for. When I ask for your opinion give it too me and stop thinking about your wank guitar solo coming up. (We get along but just had to let that out)

4. Having the guitar player give me dagger eyes if I miss a note under a solor, but if she misses a part were all supposed to laugh and joke about it.

5. buying my guitar player a Pod xt live so the guitar would sound good through my bose system. then her not taking the time to sit down and adjust the patches to her liking and complaining about the sound. Then after being sick of her complainging, adjusting patches with her for 10 hours straight, teaching her how you use it, and getting kick ass patches still being considered, " the mean guy," because I made her actually sit down with the unit and get it too work.

6. Going into GC, wanting to check out basses, but there is always the sterotypical guy popping and slapping. And thats all their doing, no melody no song structure. Wow your great, you can pound on a string, why don't you just play the drums instead.

7. People who walk by when you are checkingouta bass at GC or just noodleing during practice and thinking that you aren't a good player because you don't wank/pop/slap like an uncontrollable spaz. Sorry I don't play funk, and I'm not a RHCP cultist. I can do it, but it doesn't fit into anything I like, or makeup.

8. guitar players who pick up basses so that they can whip out the 3 pop/slap routines they memorized so they can convince people they can play bass as well as guitar. "See bass is easy."

Wow that was like therapy.
