Speaking of Schecter - I bought this Stiletto Extreme back in the spring - about $489 street, my go to mid-level bass for the heavier rock/metal. Active pup's, fast neck, etc.

Your hands/fingers and ears will let you decide. I wouldn't buy one until I have played each....but I am a PJ devotee....not trying to sway you or anything.....;)

No bass whatsoever.

After all, more often than not, Black Metal lacks low end, or is so lo-fi that instrument quality does not matter. (Don't get me wrong, I love me some BM.)

Yes, that would be too cheesy. And too narrow-minded as well: YMBMV (Your Black Metal may vary) and you may want to combine it with/venture into other genres as well. Plus: you do not come to Talkbass for gear minimalism, right?

Seriously, though... 'Best for BM' is kind of a difficult criterion. I'd guess that 'playability' would be the first thing to look for.

That's what I did for my first album. Well, a bass vst. That being said, my approach to Black Metal is very Melodic, without sub-genre boundaries, and modern, so none of that lo-fi crap.

I sorta do the same. Usually for my own entertainment but I also play with bands for recording. What I do tends to run the gamut from solo compositions (that sort of has some sort of country-fried jazz feel to it) all the way Grindcore.

On bass, my Jazz (passive 70's styled USA Geddy Lee) has never let me down or even left me wanting for something different. I finally achieved on bass what I have wanted on guitar: one instrument instead of a collection.

Now that I know it is possible, I am on a mission for guitar, too. So far... no winners. The ones I have tried were very, very nice and all. They'd do some genres (to my ears) VERY well and, some times, most of the ones I am interested in, VERY well. ...but then really come up very short on others. I get how much this is threading a needle, but I am VERY hopeful that the next guitar I am going to try will be it. It is a Fender American Tele Ultra.

Man, finding the holy frail of guitars is a never-ending road. I'm biased for metal so I cannot suggest anything. Wish you luck though.

And we cannot agree on those classics (and much other 'crap' that followed) being not good.

But no worries, I see your point. And I totally dig that you take another approach. (Actually, I am not too fond of most Burzum and Darkthrone wannabe clones either.)

Also, I'm personally excited by the combo of ash, walnut, maple, and pau ferro - it's my dream wood combo, and I don't think I've seen it before. I would assume the active Bartos sound good too, I might just be concerned about how noisy the whole setup is, because I'm picky about that.
