basses on you tube...really? Slap rant...

Each person in the rhythm section is also a separate member of the band, unless you play in bands that have been subjected to weird surgical experiments.

LMAO! Good one, murphy!

Okay, so now let's put that display of meaningless, headache-generating, vomit-inducing mish-mash of jibberish to the real test. Let's see if we can find an actual song where *THAT* would fit into:

Black Dog by Zep? No.
Limelight by Rush? Nope.
Roundabout by YES? I couldn't find a spot.
Peaceful Easy Feeling by The Eagles? Negative.
More than a Feeling by Boston? No dice.
Lucky Man by ELP? No cigar.
All the way from Memphis by Mott the Hoople? Nah.
Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John? Nope.
Maggie May by Rod Stewart? No.
Fire and Rain by James Taylor? Nary a spot.
Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple? Negative.
Penny Lane by The Beatles? Not.
Iron Man by Black Sabbath? No.
Tie Your Mother Down by Queen? No cigar.
Slip Kid by The Who? Nope.
Slaves Shall Serve by Behemoth? No.
Satisfaction by the Stones? Negative.
Jailhouse Rock by Elvis? Not.
The Frayed Ends of Sanity by Metallica? Nope.
All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix? No.
Carrie Anne by The Hollies? Nope.
.
.
.
.
.
(continue to infinity)

EDIT: oh wait!!! I found one!!! It would fit perfectly right in the middle of "Tangled Up In Blue" by Dylan, right after where he sings "When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe, tangled up in blue." Yeah, that's it! saWEET! I knew if I looked hard enough, I could find a useful place for it! ;)

Well fortunately there's way more to music than classic rock, prog rock, and early metal.

And it would actually work in *any* of those tunes as a bass solo. But try this is on for size:

There is??? :nailbiting: When this *THIS* happen?!! :D

Okay! I stuck that slap vid into the middle of "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor. Hey! I think we just created a new genre! Jimmy Johnson, move over bud! (as Leland Sklar raises an eyebrow!) :)

Holy hell! That sounds exactly like the inside of my washing machine! :bag:

That's a surprisingly comprehensive list of all musical situations that a bassist could play in. Thanks.
:D

BTW Louis Johnson also played fingerstyle quite well. But I get that as a slapper he'd be forced to slap on these songs, otherwise the point seems rather silly. Peer pressure, lowered expectations and things of that sort wouldn't allow him to use other techniques that he recorded with elsewhere.

Yeah, I copped out. My fingers started to get tired as I was typing, so I just went with the .....(infinity) approach rather than type 500 more songs! :)

I'm just having too much fun posting in the OP's "slap rant" thread! Partly because I'm just a silly person, and partly because slap bass makes me vomit. It's just an uncontrollable biological reaction that I have. I experience the same reaction when confronted with lima beans. Gross!!! :vomit:

:D ;)

I can listen to just about anything... and not listen if that's what I'd rather do.
:D

Well, you're a better person than I am. There's music I like, and there's music that makes me puke 100 yards horizontally (such as Foreigner and Lynyrd Skynyrd). But I'll tell ya what. I *ALWAYS* welcome differing opinions and perspectives. I would NEVER want to live in a world where we all liked the same thing and had the same opinions. That would be a helluva freakish science fiction world that I wouldn't want to live in. So when someone expresses an opinion that differs from mine, I am so very thankful for it, because that's what makes this world worth living in.

I think one of the things that entertains me the most on this planet are humans who take themselves too seriously. That's why I have so much fun on TB. It has a high entertainment value!

And thanks for the condolences, albeit unnecessary as I'm having *WAY* too much fun! ;)

Rock on, fellow TB'er!

I suggest you never attend a NAMM Show..

Now you tell me!
Yel_wink.gif

As historically more or less a fretless-only player who mainly plays old school jazz, working around a NAMM booth the last few years where it was roughly 95% all slap all the time actually hasn't bothered me a bit. Quite to the contrary actually. It's pretty easy for me to build stuff that works for me after all these years of figuring that out, but much more fun and interesting to see and hear how it works with other filters in place. Enough so as to encourage me to get a 5 string fretted singlecut and shed on a bunch of new things, gig occasionally in other genres that are new to me or that I only did much decades ago, and so on. And if I go again next year I fully intend to put myself on the firing line and throw down like everyone else in the booth, for better or worse. If you can't beat 'em...

Because we're not complaining about this thread like he is complaining about slap-happy demo videos. To the contrary, we enjoy telling the OP how wrong he is.
Wrong about what? He's stating his opinion, and I believe its a valid, logical position. But I digress. I was speaking to a specific group of people who were telling him to just not care about it, then ironically posted in here to tell him that.

Also, I have absolutely nothing against slapping or tapping. I just understand the experience that the OP is discussing, because in my search for review vids on specific gear items, it was really difficult to wade through the reviews that primarily showed the slap capabilities of the amp rather than what the vast majority use it for.

True, everyone has an opinion but why is it always slap bass that gets negative based threads (well sound companies too)??? It's always "I hate slap!" Or "make slap go away"? Then a ton of members chime in with the chant! It's getting really old. This has been going on for years. Literally! I was under the impression that the mods would shut these negative slap threads down but I guess not. So some of us have to come in and defend the playing style. I really thought we were a fraternity of unique musicians who support each other. I guess not. So it's now pro slap vs. anti slap! Sad. Really sad.
