And John Entwhistle, Jack Bruce, Phil Lesh, Geddy Lee, etc. etc. Most bassists recognized as great could and did step forward from the groove and deliver a memorable bit of melody or rhythmic embellishment.

We might pause and reflect that very few slappers are on par with Larry Graham or Mark King. If you listen to them you'll notice it's not all metallic clanking and speed. There's melodic content and tone and a huge amout of control in their technique that's almost totally absent from the bulk of slappers out there.
It's not so much there's a problem with the technique itself. I think the problem is there's so many slappers out there who don't do it well - but still think they have these incredible skills. It's kinda like some kid with a big ego who can play speed scales all over the neck decides he's now ready to go out and teach the jazz world a thing or two about music and "real jazz."
Oh wait. One already tried that, didn't he…
The problem with technique and gear is that they won't make you a musician. Or create good music by themselves. Do you compliment a carpenter on the hammer he's using and his technique for hammering nails, or do you reserve judgement until you look at the things he's built?
It's not all about technique or gear. I think when it comes to slapping or shredding, the people who do often lose sight of that. Assuming they ever understood it at all.

I'm sorry OP, but I want to hear it. For lack of a better word, it shows the "dynamic range" of the rig/bass. I'd like to hear it:
* with slap
* fingers
* flat wounds
* round wounds
...you get the idea. And yes, I've done plenty of product demo's and videos for certain companies playing slap bass.

I agree, OP. It's super annoying trying to wade through so many reviews of basses or amp setups when all they do is slap. And I think your post is valid. You're just lamenting the disproportionate amount of slapping in reviews compared to the reality of how the instrument is played.

I'm gonna go one higher: reviews of five strings where the B string isn't played once. Instant rage mode.
The most frustrating thing I've encountered is trying to find Youtube sound samples of a less common bass, and finding that the small handful of vids that come up are all either slapping or recorded with the built-in mic on a cell phone. (There's one gent on there who's a really good player and has demoed several basses with plenty of non-slap playing, but not one vid that I saw had direct audio so there's no bottom end and you can't really evaluate the sound.)
Slap=theater. Legato passages with maybe a few percussive bursts can best demonstrate a bass and or strings or pickup. Unfortunately, not about to happen. Slap demos will prevail. I agree with the OP. Thank you for this thread.

Best slap player I ever heard was a guy playing upright in a cow punk gypsy jazz trio. Guys like Larry Graham just adopted a style they heard upright players like Milt Hinton doing, that's its origin, Graham just did it on electric instead of the upright.
Even Flea has gotten away from the hyper slap style he was so famous for. Mostly uses the old Jazz bass with flats these days.

I was at the Summer NAMM. This guy did not slap and played this thing beautifully. I was impressed. I was expecting slap.

I was in Sam Ash trying out a 4003w when they hit the market. I played a medley of Beatles tunes on it. When I finished the 2 salespersons told me it was a real pleasure listening to me play without slapp'n da bass. Made me feel good.
On another note, I wonder how sales personnel feel about going to work and hearing guitarist shredding all day, because if you walk into a guitar center there's slap bass in the bass section and Eddie Van Halen wanna be's in the guitar section.
