I used to really hate this look, but have done a 180 in recent years. I'm thinking of getting creme covers for the (replacement) pups in my early-'76 P-Bass, which is stripped to natural with a tort guard.

I had a pair of cream DiMarzio J's in the early '80's when it was all I could get to fix a pickup that opened up on my '75 J-bass, when you couldn't get replacements from Fender and there was nobody to rewind them, just as the aftermarket for pickups was starting to become viable.

Does the J pickup measure a tad more than 7 kohms? If so, then it is an early J, because current J's are a tad less than 7 kohms. Way back then, a few years after they were introduced, and when others started marketing aftermarket pickups, before Bass Player split off from Guitar Player, they did a shootout of the available J pickups. Some were "prettier," some were more "vintage" sounding, as you can imagine, but the consensus was that to hold down the fort in a rockin' band, the Model J was the pickup to get: a little less top end, but a lot of grind, slotted well in the mix, and humbucking as a bonus.

Yes, they absolutely are! My favorite bass and favorite EVER cabs I run stereo with low-pass to the bottom and full range / EFX to the top. Completing the build is a Tuba 24 sub with an internal crossover (High pass ~120-150hz to the Tuba and low pass above that to the bottom Jack). I am so damn happy with my rig that I may be the only bassist on this site to fall asleep without having to inhale/exhale into a paper bag labelled "GAS" on the side

Nice B40, how do you like the pickup placement on that guy?

I love it. Very comfortable to me. I am not sure if it may be a little different than the production model, but it is very different than the Vulture models.
