Vinnie Hornsby from Sevendust. I've seen him record in the studio and he sits and uses a traditional picking style and position. Live he looks ********. Bass past his knees, picking (or whatever) right on the 20th fret of his Epiphone Les Paul bass. I don't know why, I just don't. Morgan Rose is one of the best drummers I've ever heard or seen, but what a bizarre rhythm section companion he's got. I cannot stand watching Vinnie play.

I play fingerstyle myself. But . . . Chris Squire. That's about all I ever need to hear when someone wanks about playing bass with a pick. In fact, I think I'll put Fragile on going to work today just to hear it again.
What is it that you can't get? The tone? The technique? If you're of the mistaken view that Squire a pick-player lacks in either of those just put on a classic Yes CD and you will get some schooling.

If no one mentioned him earlier, Sting's technique is god-awful. That whole thumb-picking thing looks like a borrowed guitar usage; what's weird is that I have seen him use standard two-finger plucking technique (on this one song "Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot").
Also, his fretting technique looks very clumsy -- almost as if his hand is too small for a regular-scale bass.
He's just as awkard on the guitar, too.
Also, I've never been a fan of Jack Bruce's "clawhammer" picking technique (even though I think he's a brilliant player). And Paul McCartney looks like a guitarist playing bass, as well.

I have to grudgingly agree here. Billy is from my hometown. he is a few years older than me and so I have seen him off and on for many years. An amazing player but I have never,ever dug his sound. Nowhere near my idea of what the instrument should sound like.
