BassTalk247 Permanently Closed

I had no problem with the guys who went in an exodus from here to there, and some asked if I would join there. I decided not to, not out of any hostility but because I also had no problem with how things were run here and one bass forum tempts me to waste enough of my time as is. I'm sorry it didn't work out and that Ed's not feeling well, but I do think @FilterFunk has a point - that a loosely moderated forum would melt down after a little while seemed pretty likely to me. It would be nice if we could all just get along, but the internet is the internet.

So...BassTalk247 was cool until the people who "take themselves too seriously" and the "hypocrites" came along? There was nothing in place to keep these interlopers from destroying the site so quickly? The "original group" shares no responsibility for the demise? It seems to me that the meltdown came way too quickly to place the blame on uptight members. BassTalk247 should have flourished without all those pesky TB-style draconian rules...right? Yet it's now permanently closed.

Maybe rules actually work. They'll never be perfect (because people will never be perfect), but they keep things in check enough for a site to stay together.

"Passive aggressiveness & veiled insults" are a pain, and difficult to monitor. Direct attacks and rampant thread hijacking, however, can and should be dealt with, and have been dealt with here on TB, making it a better place, IMO.

A site where members just let the fur fly yet still maintain a overall sense of helpfulness, respect and civility? I have yet to see it.
That's not exactly how we moderated. Direct attacks and insults weren't tolerated, not even in the "Off The Hook" section. In said section adult language was tolerated, however. This was democratically decided by voting. After the first year, moderators were chosen by nomination and voting. To my opinion the site was well moderated, with a little more tolerance than over here. We had a good team of respectful moderators. Believe me, we sometimes had a hard time moderating that bunch of outlaws :D, but I liked it a lot.

I don't suppose anybody caught a pic of this, the forum appears to be down.
No, but I did snap a pic of this. I thought it was (sadly) funny.

what's sad is Ed putting that page up to garner sympathy. he reformatted the site to stage his rage shutdown. the "REAL" donation page was full of contributors! the posted goals were always met. the BS he posted yesterday probably represents some significant number in his life. :(
i'm afraid people think it was a lame site,... it wasn't! it had alot of great attributes as Ed is a man with significant assets as well as amazing skills in Web Design and maintenance. Ed is very capable and he spoiled us with options.

Honestly, I wish I could have been apart of it. I did stroll through the halls and did see some good stuff over there.

Sure we were working on it. The place could eventually have been sub-zero cool. We were just about to install a GAS-o-meter, to be displayed underneath each avatar. I miss it... :(
I'm definitely with you on this Jay, it was getting pretty cool over there, well moderated, yet free spirited. I will miss it too.
But, most of us are still here, still together, and still friends. Let's all take a lesson from what transpired, and vow to continue to treat other members with respect. We do that, and Talk Bass will be better than it's ever been.
