+1 my first bass was the T24...which has since been handed down to my neice.....very nice beginner bass. Nice skinny neck easy on inexperienced hands and fingers.

ibanez gsr200 or any good used ibanez i can get cheap
a used peavy grind 4 string or a new peavy millenium BXP

For $250 to $300 you could go on ebay and get yourself a good used Peavey T-40.

Well, I throw my .02 in here. I just bought my first bass from musiciansfriend.com - a Dean Edge10a with active electronics - $149.99 shipped. I was worried about ordering online but it came without a flaw and was setup pretty well out of the box. Plus I got a free gift - a Dean Bass amp thing that's just for headphones so you can play somewhere without having to carry your bass amp around 
Its a great bass - even though I just bought a P-bass (an opportunity buy) I still play the dean just as much as the fender.

Its a good one for the money IMO - got a thinner neck than my fender which makes it a bit more comfortable for a new bass player. It looks great - just keep a good 9v battery handy just in case.
For the money I feel like I got a really good deal.
A guy up ^ there mentioned a Peavey Grind, but remember - the Peavey Grind is a 35" scale passive bass with 2 volumes / 2 tones, and beautiful, however all the other basses you're looking at are 34" scale. You might not like a 35" scale do to the longer reach, and tighter strings - try one first.
The same guy must have gotten a badly used Ibanez GSR (something happened to it). They have a very good rep sheet, and it wouldn't hurt to check-out the SR/SRX line either.

i also saw the washburn package cause i read some reviews and i heard its an excellent
bass and it comes with a nemesis amp and i read some on that to and heard it was good
but i cant decide cause ive heard good and bad about both

i did.i played a washburn Force 2 and i didn't like it. but not because of the bass , but because of the strings and the sound.it had some crap like aluminium strings ( maybe oxidated ) and some weak sound.
the ibanez....i already told you.
man, i am still saying that u should go with a Peavey. i was very impresed when i touched one and it was a C4, a cheap one.i still have that one but it has an electtronic issue. go with the millenium.anyways, keep us informed of ur decision and ur first impresions when u first touch the bass ( any bass ) u'll get.

i have a nock off fender p bass that i routed out to fit a bride pick up i love it i paid 150 bucks for it with an amp. i bought off a friend who originally payed 500 for the bass and 400 for the amp. I had a few basses to pick from including real fenders. i personaly just found this one to have the best tone. basically what I'm saying is go to a music store and try out some basses even if you feel a little intimidated by all the good players don't be, Just try all the basses in your price range on an amp that is similar to your own, buy the one that sounds best to YOU.

Can't you just go to a local GC, and try them all out? All the basses mentioned in this thread are nice basses.

i am speaking out my opinion.that's all.i say what i felt.if others ibanez basses are great, i don't say they aren't but i can say what i don't know either, right?
