Behringer XR18 X-Air

I am looking at a digital board (probably the Soundcraft) and my question is how are these if you are playing and running sound at the same time? Seems like it may make it easier as you can set up more things in advance and save them but on the other hand how is it trying to use a tablet while on stage? Any advice?

Works fine for us.. either BL or person out front pushes faders via iPad app after sound check is done.

If your mic stand is stable they make clips for tablets. One brand of many:

I am using the XR18 - Have done six blues jams with it - a host band and 4-6 changeovers. that is a challenge and a great learning experience.

I am far from having it all wrapped up - this is my first stab at digital.

Saying that - I used it to do sound for One of my hero's last week. I had a little trouble getting his monitor where I wanted it but he seemed happy with it.
I vow to learn it better. I will be using it for Several national acts coming up - and hope that they all go this well.

I am just running basics on it right now, I only want to screw one thing at a time up - maybe later I can multiple things up AND record them! That time will come.......

one thing i can suggest that some old-school guys might not have naturally gone for is to ditch the graphic EQs on mains and monitors and use the parametrics!

paras are already better sonically, but until now were harder to figure out and use; on a tablet, they're easier, being able to push around and pinch an EQ curve with your finger is what parametrics have been waiting for all along!

Yes - That is exactly what I did. I honestly think it was monitor placement and my inexperience with this new system, coupled with using his mics whcih were nice, but just different from mine. He used Senheiser 835s and they were nice. I typcially place the monitor at about the 7.00 position, and it works for me with SM58s, D5s, and Beta 58s which I use regularly. the monitor was directly behind his mic at 6.oo and I just couldn't get it rung out like I usually do.

It will come in time - I have the luxury of a friend working with me - who is like minded on sound expectations - we are small scale and amateur, but know what sounds good. laptop on FOH tablet for monitors at side stage. small venue less than 200 but a decent room . I will see if I can put any pics up to give you an idea.

Lee, using an iPad2 - not on the XR, but with the X32 producer..
Has worked OK so far.. my Android tablet works better tho'.. better/faster wireless connectivity!

I use both also, but use a stand alone router and the laptop is always hardwired. When I first got the mixer I read up on the Behringer forums about drop outs and never wanted a situation like that. It has been flawless with the external router never ever lose a connection.

The only reason I've not fully implemented the XR18 yet is that I'm going to get a new 2-in1 laptop/touchpad combo with discrete network connector built in so I can use a separate router for wireless or hard-wired control. For primary control, I don't like the thought of wireless only tablets or phones, nor the small size of their screen. And since there is no docking for anything, then the wired option seems to be a "must have" item in the heat of battle if wireless is glitchy. Soon I'll have the new computer, 15" screen size minimum, and can't wait to use the XR 18 for all my digital mixing chores. It's long overdue for me.

Totally agree on this.

I jumped for joy when 19 years ago, we got a Crest LM40X20 monitor console with, wait for it, onboard parametrics for the output buses. So did the Yamama PM4000M. Yet I still had to have a rack full of graphic EQs sitting there to shut up visiting band engineers (unless it was their own monitor guy, then all of it was his/her problem). But that's what the insert button was for...:roflmao::roflmao: (

Finally bit the bullet and updated my old, crusty laptop to a slim line 2-in-1 laptop/tablet. I have one with a network port so that I can hardwire it to my router or directly to the XR18 X-Air for foolproof connectivity. Tonight I had the 2-in-1 wired to a router, XR18 wired to the router, and wireless control via both and iPad2 and Samsung Galaxy smart phone. Having 15.6" of touch screen real estate along with the hardware keyboard made me feel a lot better about using this for gigging. Now I just need to do a stress test to make sure everything is stable, and off to the next gig it will go. So far, so good. I still continue to be impressed by this little mixer box.
