Bergantino AE212 - Just Released

... Like often happens, the differences that I hear at home and that you can hear on the comparison clip, (and on the couple of low volume gigs I've had it on) between the AE212 and AE410 are more impactful when you crank it up.

I've noticed that the AE212 likes more power. It sounds great at moderate volume, but really comes to life when you crank it.

Wow. I just don't understand it. I use a D-212XLT at my band's practice space, and it doesn't sound anything like my AE212. I actually owned that XLT and sold it to the guy at whose house we practice. It is neither as crisp nor as tight as the Berg. It seems to emphasize low mids a lot more. If the AE212 sounded anything like it, I would not have bought it. The D-212XLT is the cab that turned me off to 12s, and the AE212 turned me back on.
Just curious, but what other 212's have you used? The 212xlt was definitely a low-mid cab IMO. You think the AE212 is tighter in the low-end than the 212xlt? That would be a huge plus to me!

Obviously they don't sound identical. The AE line of cabs is however, IMO, in the same tone universe as the XLT line (i.e., punchy), but as you say, much better (not as peaky). The AE line has that similar low mid punch and is a bit aggressive in the upper mids, which is how I hear the XLT line. I liked the 212XLT very much. IMO and IME there. Put another way, the tonal relationship between the 212XLT and 410XLT is VERY similar to the tonal relationship between the AE212 and AE410, with both 212's being fatter, smoother and less upper mid present than their corresponding 410.

Again, the AE210 is in a different league versus the 212XLT, so I agree there, but it is similarly tight down low and on the 'modern' side of the voicing spectrum to me (relatively bright top end, present mids, deep but not overwhelming low end).

Again, IMO and IME there!

Edit: Also, if your experience with a given cab (in this case, the 212XLT) was limited to one rehearsal room, you might not have gotten an accurate feel for the performance of that cab, much less the interaction of the cab and the head you might have been using at the time.

Ken, here's what I'm thinking would sound good. I've only used one Schroeder 15+L, but I'd think stacking two of them would sound perfect for me. I'd get a little bit more low-end extension from the coupling, and then then somewhat aggressive but still relatively even voicing of the cab. Is the AE212 sort of a representation of what that might sound like in your opinion?

That would be a nice stack. It still would not have the round, fat low end of the AE212 IMO, and would be a bit more bright and grindy up top, but it would punch like crazy!

As I always say when stacking two of any cab... if you like one, you will really like two.... louder and more full as a general rule.

I guess I'm just looking for something kinda like that stack would be in a single cab solutions. A bit more low-end with a touch of low-mid bump would be nice. I don't want anything even close to the UL410 or Acme kind of voicing. Some reviews of the AE212 make it sound perfect, and others not so much. Guess I'll never know without just trying it. It's just an expensive experiment.

Really great review Ken! Thank you for your update.

I knew that there was a tonal difference between the ae410 and the ae212 but you put what I found into words. I won't get a chance to gig as the band I was playing with broke up and I am traveling for work more than I hoped.

But I really feel that the tonal difference between the two is enough to justify owning and loving both. I really think that Jim Bergantino just nailed it with both of the AE cabinets for me.

Bring your AE212 to a future SNO gig and sit in with us!! I'd love to hear it out in the audience! :bassist:

Or not. I don't need the GAS. I should really stay away from AE212 threads. :scowl:

I do NOT need one . . .

I have them and power them with a Shuttle 12. They are portable. They do serve up a bunch of sound. I'm gigging with my NV610, when possible.

I'm going to go with Ken's feedback. The Schro's sound good and perform well in terms of punching through a mix. They do not have the low end charm that any of JB's offerings serve up. Different tonal profile. Depends on your prefs.

For my needs, the NV610 is great and the only problem I have with the AE212 is that it really isn't small enough to fit into a profile I would use. But, that's just me.

What's the ship date on yours Bart? :p

Hi guys,

Have any of you had the chance to compare the AE212 to a stack of two UL112s? I play the ULs with my TFB550A amp, but find them to be too mid scooped with too much going on in the deep low end. Also, I originally got the pair of ULs to have a modular rig, but I almost always bring both of them, so I might as well have a one cab rig.

Thanks,

Bjørnar

Hello. I've moved from a variety of UL cabs over the past decade to the AE's for that exact reason. The entire AE line has a more even frequency response down low, versus the bit of dip in the low mids with the UL's. Some are pretty happy with the 112UL/110UL stack, since the much more low end attenuated and mid punchy 110 kind of yin and yangs with the 112UL to result in a more balanced overall tone.

However, the AE's are tighter and punchier down low (although the AE212 has the 'biggest bottom' of any AE cab or stack), and more upper mid bright (versus the airy treble response of the UL's) although the AE212 is the least aggressive in the upper mids.

From the way you describe you 112UL stack, I think you would dig either the AE112 x 2 stack or the bigger, smoother, deeper sounding AE212.

That being said, since the TF550b is very warm and punchy and smooth, that head sounds magnificent IMO with the AE410!!!! I have not heard it with the AE212 yet. I'm sure that also sounds good.

Thanks Ken, I have been thinking about the AE410 as well, but was afraid it would be too aggressive for me. What you say about the match with the TFB550 sounds like it might be just right for me as a one cab solution. I can´t try it before I buy since no stores in Norway carries Bergantino, so your input on this is very much appreciated!

Yeah, the AE line is a lot more evenly voiced. I do love the UL112/UL110 stack, but that's because they very perfectly compliment each other. The UL112 IS scooped, but the UL110 fills it in very nicely. I would never gig with a pair of UL112's. I've tried it before and had the exact same problem you are with weak mids.

I would gig (and have gigged) with a pair of AE112's, tho... no hesitation. I'm sure a single AE212 would also work every bit as well... maybe even better.

heh heh.

Probably at least six months, maybe more.

I've just bought an EAW VRM12 monitor (kickass monitor BTW -- the coaxial 12" makes for an incredible sounding, tiny box) and will be buying another one very soon.

But yeah, the AE212 is top of my GAS list. It will likely be the next big bass gear purchase. :help:

My AE410 is my all time favorite gigging cab, but from what I've heard it sounds like the AE212 might be even more my tone, so I'll be looking long and hard at getting the 212, once I'm back in good graces with The Management. :hiding:

Good thing I didn't make the GTG or I'd have GAS for one of your fEarful cabs as well.

As a point of reference, where did you have the master volume set on the F500 assuming you set the gain to where it occasionally clips? Just trying to get a sense of how loud is "loud"...

Just saw this post. Again, with the preamp at just under clip (on the MB heads, you actually NEVER want to see that pre gain clip light come on), the master was between 10 and 11 o'clock (I've never had the master past noon on the F500... my guess is, that is about 85% of usable volume at noon). EQ... just a touch of bass boost on my onboard Sadowsky pre... F500 flat except for a very small upper mid boost at around 1K or so (I like my grind).. filters off. This cab is pretty high SPL, so that is pretty loud!

So, cranking pretty well, although surely not 'ear bleeding loud'... I refuse to do that. So, the volume was basically loud enough to put a full, fat low end under a band (horn section, two singers, bass, keys, drums, guitar) that was playing about as loud as the moderately hard hitting unmic'd drummer.

It didn't flinch on the slap transients at all.. nice and open. One of the things that makes me want to kill myself on a gig is going from fingerstyle to a brief slap section or really digging in (I never change tone or touch knobs doing this), and having the low end compress due to the drivers reaching their mechanical limits. This happens on most 2 x 112 rigs I've played, and even my very nice TecAmp s212. However, ZERO low end quashing with this baby... similar to my experience with my 410's.

Might the AE410 perform a touch better at the highest volume (like outside with no PA support)? Probably, but those type of gigs are few and far in between.
