Bergantino B/Amp at NAMM

Just got my BT pedal. Man, so cool to have a third scene and footswitch mute. Damn, this amp just keeps on giving.

Just to save me going back n back n back thru this thread. ... @husky123 what are the dimensions of the pedal. ..? Approximate..is fine.
I keep hearing how tiny it is.
I WILL be ordering one soon, that's fer sure! Being able to switch between presets on this amp is simply icing!

Couple of answers:

1) Yes, the AE212 profile is available on the site. I gig the B|Amp with AE212's, and it is excellent.
2) Jim's intent with the profiles is to optimize the response for the design goal he intended for the cab in question. In the case of the AE212, I don't hear a whole lot of difference; which suggests that the cab by itself was already pretty close to what he intended. Hope that helps.

In the case of 4), I haven't had any amplified gigs with upright since I got the B|Amp. But, if one came up, I would probably take the HD112 instead. FWIW, the best amplified upright tone I ever had was with a Schroeder 15+L, which has a pretty severely truncated low end. So, with the B|Amp, I would probably be cranking the HPF way up to simulate that response.

Thanks for your helpful reply!
So you think the AE 212 doesn't work so good for upright? Or you think that 212 cans in general don't work good for upright? I haven't tried this cab live with my upright yet....

Do you know what the input impedance is from the Bergantino amp? so that I can use it without an external preamp for my Fishman Full Circle pickup.

The input impedance is 1Meg which may or may not be high enough for the full circle. I'm not really familiar with specific piezo pickups and what kind of input impedance they require for optimum response.

No, the 212 is a GREAT cab. It's just that the additional volume capability it gives you is difficult to use with an upright due to feedback issues. So, I take a 112, which generally gets the job done.

Just a little helper I've found is that using an ART TubeMP (about $40) in front of the amp seems to raise the feedback threshold. YMMV

Have you tried using the VFBF to eliminate any feedback. Also sometime reversing the phase in the program menu helps too.

Have only had unamplified upright gigs since you added this; so, haven't used it yet. Looks great. My experience with feedback with the upright is that it tends to be a lower harmonic related to the specific bass body. So, your filter should be pretty effective; once the player figures out that frequency for the bass in use. I understand your point in the manual about the environment; but, the doghouse body resonance seems pretty dominant IME.

Ok, can't you just put the volume of the amp down when you use the AE 212? I see no reason to buy an 112 cab just for that.
I also have an ART Tube MP. But for upright I always use my Fishman Platinum preamp just to be sure that I have the right input impedance. The Platinum is 10 Meg which is always good for any piezo pickup out there I think. I am not sure if 1 Meg is as good for that (?). Just don't want to loose any frequencies by having a mismatch.

Yes! That's what volume controls are for. I just choose the 112 to minimize the schlepp.

I can testify that the feedback filter works. I put my AGB 14 inches away from a CN212 with the sound hole facing the cab. It fed back on A like a mofo. I went in and cut the A 10dB and no more feedback.

Schatten makes these for proper piezo loading. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Ok cool! I guess soundwise you can just as well use a Fishman Platinum preamp (?). That also has 10 Meg just like the Schatten.
Absolutely. I just posted this for those that don't already have a high impedance pre or want something that can be clipped to a strap and has a volume control. the Fishman stuff is great and there are plenty of other devices geared towards this. Enjoy!

My B|Amp is making funny noises with the compressor engaged. I have swapped cabs, basses, instrument and speaker cables. It only does it with the compressor in the circuit. It is a rasping/crackling sound much like a damaged driver. Has anyone else noticed an issue with their compression? Can some of you try replicating this? Gain is set below clip light engaging at all times, compressor is at 5 and gain is at 8. all eq is flat with a HPF set at 40Hz. TIA!

Yep, I've also noticed that. Meant to ask here but always postponed it.

Why does the RNC distort my bass guitar?

At the risk of sounding too esoteric and philosophical, there are many universal laws that are, many times, inconvenient (like, say, gravity). Well, there's a mutual (and universal) exclusivity between low frequency fidelity and fast compressor release times. Stated another way: the faster a compressor's release time, the more distorted the lower frequencies will be. "Okay, okay!", you say, "I know that! But why don't I have similar problems with my other compressors?" Simply put, the RNC's normal mode release times are shorter than many compressors (some of the fastest that we've seen). This means that the RNC will induce low frequency distortion more frequently than your other compressors. "Why didn't you make the RNC so it wouldn't distort my bass notes?" Because then we'd limit (no pun intended) your creative choices for other sound sources where a really fast release time would sound really gonzo...like on kick or snare drums. Try compressing a snare drum track with the RNC set for really fast attack and release times. You'll here drum resonances that you've never heard before that can be creatively used to add spice to your mixes!
"How do I avoid or reduce the low frequency distortion?" This one's easy: increase the release time until the distortion goes away. (Doing my best Groucho Marx impression: "Does it distort when you do that? Well don't do that!")
I now recall a similar situation when I bought my FMR RNC Compressor. (See the above quoted post from another thread). This was ultimately the cause in that case. I wonder if the same thing is happening with the Berg compression circuit. Hopefully some more technologically savvy TB'ers can help answer this question.
