Get a Yamaha RBX 170. It's my cheap bass and backup, but it has great tonality and is easy to swing at somebody's face in an emergency.

I bought my P Bass used. It has two very distinctive teeth marks on the top rail. The guy I bought it from didn't look like the violent type. Guess you never can tell.
