I've never played one even though I've lusted from afar over the years. I love the look and the sound I've heard from people who use them but all the negative talk I've seen here about poor QC, poor cust service, etc, makes me VERY leery about ever getting one of my own.

Try one dude. I don't understand the hate. I had an 85 4003 that I would trade a kidney to get back.

it would be cool to know in general what bass is hated the most, so i can buy one.
if you can't sell your bass for more than 700 bucks, then sell it.

If your just starting out and dont understand anything about set-ups and the mechanics of a Rickenbacker, your not going to like it. So if you try one and dont want to take the time to understand whats going on, move on.

There are a lot of "off the shelf" basses in the stores that immediately setup and play great from day one,,and there seems to be alot of players that want that, most of them here on Talkbass it seems.

Ricks are great basses. "We laugh at what we dont understand".

I just picked up a Rogue LX405 Pro in a cash/trade deal, very nice bass for the low dollar budget. Sweet neck, versital sound, active/passive option, all in all way more solid than the price would suggest. I've got a Gibson Bass V on the way...the Rogue will be in the classifieds post haste!

Ric's are a very polarizing instrument,even the guitars(I personally don't know any guitar player that owns or even likes them)...be it the price,quality,the CEO,customer service,looks, sound or whatever,they seem to get a lot of attention here and(IMO) most of it is negative..I touched my first Ric at 16 yrs. old and knew right then that was the bass for me and have always owned\played one while other basses have come and gone.I don't hate(that's a strong word)any bass but, Ric's are home to me.couldn't imagine not having one...

I don't think Rickenbackers qualify for this topic. There is absolutely no consensus saying they suck. There is a sizable contingent who say they have issues, sure, but not enough to even call that a consensus. There may be a consensus of people who say that Rickenbacker as a company may not be ideally set up for proper customer service, and that pricing is a little unreasonable when compared to the product, but few people say that the basses actually suck.

On the other hand I think a good example for this topic would be my Hondo 4001 copy. It is generally accepted that Hondo Ric copies are awful, but I really love mine. It's not even good, copywise—wrong scale length, bolt-on neck, no binding, etc. But it's really solidly built, the neck is super comfortable, and it gets an extremely warm and even tone with the flatwounds I have on it. I've never had any kind of fret buzz issue, the neck has never needed any adjustment, and the wood grain in the body (it's a mapleglo) is really attractive. But as far as Ric copies go, Hondos are supposed to be awful. I guess I got a good one.
