Best Bass under 300! + more...

Like the title says, I would like a good bass under $300.00. I have been checking out the reviews and various other areas, but I am even more overwhelmed.

I had been playing a Cort 5 string for the past few years and I liked it for the most part but felt like I wanted to go back a toa 4 string. A few weeks ago I bought an Alvarez Acoustic Electric which looks great and sounds good unplugged but I miss the "feel".

The dilema I have is the church I play in wants me to play though the system. I bought bought a BX1 Zoom pedal but although it has a lot neat sounds, nothing makes it for me.

So I am looking for some suggestions on a good all around bass, better pedal that wont break the bank. I am also a somehwat sloppy player which is another reason I think I am so nhappy with the acoustic one.. any and all suggestions would be great.

there are many I'm sure, but I would look for a used bass and get more bass for the buck.

If you're buying new, many of the newish Squier basses are excellent for the money. The Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe lines are all really nice; look great, sound great, pretty good construction (I have a VM P myself). If you're looking to spend as little as possible buy still come up with a decent instrument, look into SX basses (rondomusic.com -- search on the boards for "Essex").

There's quite a few...Peavey's good in this department, as are Squier and for the most part Ibanez. Those are the most popular three in this price range though there are many, many more brands that will give you the same(or better) quality for that price.

Also, check the local used market.

+1 on the squire - i got a vm jazz used for $150 - terrific bass, as good as anything that costs 5 times as much. of course, if you have a budget of $300, you could get many different good brands of bass used for that money. good luck!

How about an LXPro 4-string or 5-string. Or maybe an Epiphone Thunder IV bass?

I definitely think the squier CV's/VM's are the best bang for the buck, and they're right at $300.

Obligatory SX shilling here... You could get two for less than $300, and they're great basses for the money!

If they want you to play through the church P.A, and you dont like your pedal now, look into getting a Sansamp / Tech 21 Bass Driver. You can set the tone to nearly anything you'd want, and its a direct in.

Bass Player magazine rates the VM Fretless Jazz as the Best Value under $700. They really are nice basses.....hard to beat for the price!

All throw in my 2 cents for SX also. They are well worth the price. Particularly the LTD models, which you can get for about $185 new.

Best under 700....wow... I knew they were nice but thats a real accomplishment right there. I would go with a Squire.

TBC basses are great and most used are under $300... MTD Artist basses are fantastic basses for under $300 used and most are in near new condition...

If you can do your own setup and basic maintenance get a couple of SXs. Otherwise buy a VM or CV Squier. I find their quality to generally be better than MIM Fenders. Not to say you can't find an excellent MIM... you just have to weed through a few to find one worthy of the price tag.

BTW - look for used or even new ATKs (Guitar Center sells an exclusive model ATK3EX1) that can run as little as $200.
