best delay pedal in your opinion

okay so seriously what in your opinion is the best delay pedal you have used.
for me it is the behringer echo machine.
by that statement you should know i don't have much experience with actually using delay pedal. this is why i am making this. to see what to check out.

so yeah post your favorite delay

"Favorite" is easy to pick for most folks.

"Best" is entirely subjective & hard to define! "Best" feature set, flexibility, tone (very subjective), size, etc... It all depends on what you're looking for. For that reason, I'll not address what is the "best" delay.


My current "favorite" (favorites are like girlfriends - they change a lot) is the Empress Superdelay. It sounds amazing, has a bunch of presets and has tap tempo (which I need). The tape sim is convincing in a mix but doesn't get too crazy, which works best for me.

I like digital delays on bass for a couple of reasons: I want full lows and clear tone without too much coloration so I can still serve a 'conventional' role as a bassist with a solid bass tone. Digital control (available on some analog delays too) allows for more precise tempo syncing which also serves the whole 'conventional' role as well.

Old-school bucket-brigade and other analog delays sound great for 'featured' parts and usually have cool, wackier sounds. Pedals like EH Memory Man, etc. sound great, but aren't as ideal for what I'm going for.

Just my .02 and preferences!

My fav of all time is the Roland RE-20 Space Echo: has 12 modes, can do delay, delay+reverb or just it's z-spring reverb. The reverb has a very unique sound to it that some don't like but I dig it. Here is a crappy video of me playing on it:

I also dig the Boss RV-3 Digital Reverb/Delay as it also delay, delay and reverb and just reverb. This beast has 4 different types of reverb with a tone control and lots of range. I had the hi-cut mod done to choose between super clean digi-repeats or some analog-like darkness.

I'll second that, although I see much more usefulnes in a pedal like the Empress Superdelay. I want to get the Vintage-Modified version.

Here's an oold idea I recorded with my RE-20. The noise is a bad ground I had on my Ric(I broke it myself by removing the mute screws!), not the pedal:

Probably not your usual chorus on bass, but the Marshall EH-1 Echohead is a great not-too-pricey option. It has different modes (hi-fi, analogue, tape, multi-tap), tap tempo is possible and sounds relatively warm, to my ear anyway. I use it mainly on acoustic guitar, but recently gave it a go on bass and was pleasantly surprised. And if you think Boss pedals are built like tanks (which they are), wait 'till you pick up a Marshall pedal...

I use a DOD Digital Delay. Its pretty cool. It has internal trim pots to adjust delay lengths and so forth. Its old but it works good and I like it. I was thinking of getting a newer/better/different one but the DOD has suited my main needs for a while now. I am still on the market for a different one eventually though. The DOD will do for now.

No way there can be one delay called that is the best, I have two on my board and want a third as they are all capable of doing something the others can't and they work better in different band situations. Brands would be Earthquaker Devices, Way Huge Aqua Puss is really nice and just makes the MXR Carbon Copy sound like absolute crap, I have a custom Fuzzrocious delay which is seriously the duck's nuts for playing on bass most of the time due to the low end retention, clarity and modulation effect.

i just got a Deluxe Memory Man Tap Tempo for a great price, and I really like it. It has 3008 chips, so the maximum delay is 630ms. The delays are much clearer and brighter than the Memory Boy, but they are warm enough that you can have a LOT of delay without swamping your original signal. The modulation sounds really good, tap tempo with subdivisions (!!!!!) and expression control works well on all parameters. The UI is really good, took about 5 minutes to figure out all the functionality.

It sounds good on bass, but phenomenal on guitar, and does a good Binson simulation, but with tap tempo. If you want to create solo soundscapes, it's wonderful. Just much more inspirational than any of the digital (or even other analog) delays I've played with.

I previously used a Echo Park and a Flashback, both are pretty nice. This is definitely better sounding than either of those. It doesn't do a bunch of delay types, but what it does sounds great.
