Take back what I said about Tom Sawyer, THIS is the finest distorted bass tone ever recorded. Though I think the jury's out on whether that's Fender. Sounds more Rickenbacker to me.
Every time I hear the New Gold Dream album by Simple Minds I think I've heard the perfect bass tone.
You need a good set of headphones to hear this one. Jiminy, this P tone makes my heart go pitter patter. Perfect wool with just a hint of edge.
I always loved the tone Anthony got out of his 'career girl' jazz bass, and this cut takes the cake. Both pickups on full...perfect jazz bass tone.

even with the label of "fender bass tone" theres still too much variety to be directly comparable.

My favorite Fender Bass tones are from John Paul Jones & John Deacon, who are also my earliest bass influences.
