Um, which Fender's are MIJ? I scoured the Fender site, but didn't see it mentioned. I keep hearing good things about the MIJ's...

Best Fender's series

MIJ= made in japan,
all of the MIJ's i've seen are a sig series.
for instance geddy lee jazz, marcus miller jazz, sting p-bass.............etc.
I really dig mims on crack. Nothin' like a mexi jazz with bartolini pups, hipshot/abm bridge, warmoth body, warmoth or moses neck, and a j-retro.

I have a '78 body and a squier neck...here is the story...
Friend was given his uncles bass, a 78 jazz. The neck was cracked so he put on a new neck and switched the knobs and everything. You may say "WHY?" but trust me, this is one of the smoothest basses I have ever played. More experienced bass players love it, its like playing a fretless(feel) on a fretted bass. I bought it for $300 canadian and it was my first bass (10 months ago). I swear it is so nice to play.
Its not an official series but my friend make it so I call it the Fender Mace Series

neck plate, screws, strap buttons (may want an upgrade to straplocks), neck plate pad, washers, string tree, nut (may also want to replace this), and the pickguard (you may not want a pickguard, or a different one.)
I can't laugh too hard at PoT. I did the same thing.
My fretless is a MIJ standard Jazz from about '89 or '90.
I have put in EMG's,new tuners, new bridge (Schaller roller), new pickguard (black MOTS), knurled dome knobs, Straplocks, and I am considering a Moses neck.
It looks like the only Fender parts will be the body and the neck plate soon.

In my opinion, the Fender Jazz bass (beit old, new, vintage reissue, whatever) is the best sounding bass out there. NOTHING compares to the slappy tone of the dual single coil pickups on a Fender Jazz. One of my favorite basses EVER would be a Fender American Deluxe Jazz bass. It has a slightly smaller body and a slightly longer neck with a couple more frets. Quite the bass indeed.
The "Trashed" series. The ones where the bass has been destroyed past the point of usability and is tossed in the trash. Those have to be my favorite Fender series
The MIJ's can be ordered from Ishibashi (in Japan, see link below). The prices seem pretty good at less than half of the price of a MIA.
I'm considering the MIJ '62 RI Precision which costs just under $460 (after shipping and Customs charge of 8.7%, total comes to around $600). The MIJ reissues still come with the Amercan pickups and Alder body, but they come with non-reverse tuners and a poly finish instead of nitro).
The MIJ's don't come with a case either, but for the price it seems like a fair deal.

I finally got to try one last night for the first time. It just felt right to me and the tone wasn't too bad either.
The Guitar Center had a used one in but they wanted $1200.00 for it no case included. I'd go with a new one for that price.
I really like the 'Artist' series from Fender. Not as expensive as the ghastly priced Custom Shop stuff ($3000 for a Jaco?????) and pretty well made.
I juiced mine up with a Black Pearl pickguard, 2 new Bassline SJB-2 pickups (passive) and a SDuncan 2 band EQ -- this bass ROCKS!!! I got the Geddy new at Sam Ash in LA on sale for $599 (!) and it only cost me about $200 to add on the new stuff and it will blow the doors off more expensive Fenders!
I'll post some pics of it when it gets back from the luthier.

Here's another vote for the Artist series. I own a Roscoe Beck 5 (my main fretted bass) and a Marcus Miller Jazz, which are great instruments. I've tried out the Stuart Hamm and Jaco basses, and I remember really liking them.
Maybe you should check the link that I provided, the "beginner" models have a Basswood body and cost less but the better RI's have Alder and a USA vintage PU.
