I love all the classic live albums since I prefer a live performance or a recording of one over the most perfectly produced studio creation any day of the week.

But the most extraordinary live album/DVD I've heard in a long time is Snarky Puppy's Family Dinner series.

Family Dinner is an unusual combination of performances by local musicians in NYC along with a youth music education program. All the money from Family Dinner Volume 1 & 2 go to support that project.

Some highlights: first with this amazing sounding 12-year old Jayna Brown who is a student in the program and co-wrote (with Mike League) the song I'll Do Me:

These. Plus We Like It Here and Sylva with Metropole Orkest. They are my current listening obsession (just ask the other guys here at the shop!).

I don't know if this qualifies under the OP's definition of "album", but since I'm on an SP roll I might as well include the Dunlop Sessions video that showcased Binkey and Flood. You really get to see and hear Mike League's bass artistry on these two along with absolutely virtuoso performances by the rest of the band.



All the Dunlop Sessions are great BTW. Well worth checking out no matter what your musical tastes.

As usual, I'm late to this party, and most of my faves have already been cited at least once. Even those live recordings that have been "augmented" with studio touch-ups (The Last Waltz, Waiting for Columbus, Secret World Live, et al.) are definitely worth owning.

However, I'll throw in one more that, as a bass player, I've only recently come to appreciate: Count Basie's "Live at the Sands (Before Frank)." This is an amalgamation of live recordings in early 1966 preceding Frank Sinatra's shows at the Sands Casino in Las Vegas. The recording quality is superb – even with all the clinking glasses and tableware – and it evokes a certain era which we are likely to never witness again.
