When I was 16 I asked one of my favorite drummers in town to give me lessons. Keep in mind, he was a punk rock drummer. But REALLY good. Like Bill Sevenson mixed w/ Stewart Copland. He told me he didn't have time but I should go and buy the Stax records box set. I did. Best Lesson EVER. Not only for drums, but as a bassist. That was the day everything changed.

Realised after that actually it wasn't doing me any good playing loud all the time. Also something I tell people is 'it should sound good no matter what volume you play at, be it acoustic or with a 30,000 watt arena rig behind you'

I'm a guitarist (sorry), and the best musical advice I ever got was that trying to play like Clapton, Hendrix, or anyone else is pointless. "Just try and develop your own style with your influences and whatever skills you have at your disposal ". (Something like that, anyway). It was good advice from a very fine musician.
play what makes you happy, cause if you are not happy you might as well go work a straight job. made sence to me and although i might not be rich or famous when i play i play what i like and i'm free.
