Unless I'm in an orchestra gig or a string quartet, I always use an amp when I play upright.

He can worry about that detail later. Let him savor the joy of not carting an amp as he gracefully glides through the crowds with an upright bass.

For smaller budgets than the OP's I'd look into the Vox VX50BA: 50 watts, 8" speaker, ABS cabinet, 10 pounds (of weight, not the currency), but an external power supply.

Traynor Small Block or Fender Rumble. Test a couple sizes and go for your favorite of the bunch. There's at least 4 that fit the bill.

Just switch to the upright bass. Then you don't have to worry about carting an amp around.

Yes! Thank you to all those who said Phil Jones, yeah I've been looking at their stuff, def what I may go with, seem to also be a good at home tool as well really nice and compact and can probably attach well to my case or backpack alone!

I'd recommended investing in a good quality padded gig bag for commuting. It will make things so make easier for you being able to carry your bass on your back, combo amp in one hand and the other hand free for pushing people out of the way on the train

Oh, there are so many good options for small combo amps it's really hard to pick. The Markbass and PJB offerings are probably the best, but are expensive. Ampeg Rocketbass 110 or Fender Rumble 40 are good budget options. Both have DI's and overdrive built in. both are around 20 lbs.
