Best portable amp for commuting to school by train?

For cost and overall value, I'd go with a Fender Rumble, but their cabinets are going to take up quite a bit of room on the train. For a lighter and more compact solution, you might have to spend more money for the Markbass 801, as @SJan3 suggested.

Just switch to the upright bass. Then you don't have to worry about carting an amp around.

I also say a Phil Jones B ass Double Four with laptop battery, about $550, but worth every penny. It's the size of a shoe box, and you can also get a nice carry bag. I've used it in a large multipurpose room with 30 ukulele players and the leader singing and playing on a Fishman amp.

Absolutely. The tone is unbeatable. Sam Quilter put all the tricks of his bigger Bass Block amps into this tiny box. I've played outdoor gigs into a pair of 15" cabinets with this amp, and as a practice amp it sits with the master at 25% and the gain at 50%. I'll probably get a Genzler Bass Array cab for it eventually as a gigging rig.

I was literally about to say that, a double bass would be "super easy" to bring on the LIRR... I see so many music students struggling to bring their cello's, can just imagine how "fun" a double bass would be!

Yes! Thank you to all those who said Phil Jones, yeah I've been looking at their stuff, def what I may go with, seem to also be a good at home tool as well really nice and compact and can probably attach well to my case or backpack alone!

Yes, it has a 1/4" speaker out to connect your cabinet. The signal path is all written on the top. You have a gain that gets up into nice tube-like distortion territory, a 3-band eq, an effects loop if you want additional pedals, and a master volume right before the output. You can take balanced DI or headphone signals out without cutting the speaker output. Use a 4 or 8 ohm cabinet and a choice of full range or vintage tube amp sound.

I use a 1x8 in a fiberglass cabinet, and an Acoustic Image Focus amp. Both easily fit into a cajon bag. Total weight is about 20 pounds. Add an electric bass in a gig bag with shoulder straps, and public transport isn't a problem.

Can the school purchase an amp? In my music school days never once had to lug an amp to school as most of the rehearsal rooms had amps.

Yeah, I'm right now in the process of helping my schoolmates and some other musicians that are more causal form a rock band/causal music club and hoping we get a closet and to use club funds to buy a communal bass amp and PA system, but right now we are starting out and I doubt they would give any money to a club starting out, right now this is just a settlement club in the making lol, but yeah I def would prefer that, hoping to do that once we start up!
