Amazing bass!
Don't get me wrong, I have happily slapped my fretless too, but it can hardly be classified as "Best slap bass out there.. "

One of the best slap basses for tone and slap is a Fender Jazz, IMHO. Here's a recent gig I played, this was recorded with a KodakEasyshare camera.

I don't. You can search youtube for Manring, i think there are some cuts on there of him slapping his Vinny... although, you're hearing Manrings tone as much as the bass itself.
I would also say something like a Status Graphite is also good to learn on since it has great low action, a relatively wide neck (on most models as standard) and sensitive active electronics. I learned on a bass that cost me something like $90 25 years ago, and although it was terrible, it didn't really stop me from learning...

I saw of bunch of clips there of him using a Vinny for various finger-style and experimental techniques, but no slap. The bass seems to have a very light/bright tone that I would describe as 'pure'. It seems sensitive, but the tone is not aggressive (as opposed to the case of a lot of very active electronics, like the Status 18v electronics). Does that sound about right?

Out of all the basses I've owned, I like the slap tone of my ATK305 with the selector switch in the middle.
Dr Cheese is right on the money the best slap tone is from the bass that you like. I own a few basses myself and if you have the right equalization and you are properly compressed you can get a decent sound from a bass with a single coil or hum-canceling pickups. Vail Johnson plays a bass with humbucking pickups, Nathan East, Gail Ann Darcy to name a few Marcus Miller, Tamas Barabas, Peter Muller play single coil Jazz bass pickups. Musicality is in your fingers and in your brain. There is no holy grail of bass sound as Victor Wooten says "You must find your own voice.
Just thought I'd pop in here and say that the sound and feel of my Spector Zebop when you're slapping is fantastic.
Ken Smith. Peavey Cirrus. Kubicki. All have that same voiced pre-amp. Huge mid range boost! On another note, it's amazing how bad@$$ Vail is and even more so that his bass doesn't use standard tuning!
