best sounding bass you've ever heard.

this one is easy,the best bass ever recorded is Jaco Pastorius Fender fretless over abused Jazz Bass,the song? listen the sound on Barbary Coast and Continum and then crank the volume on Come on Come Over,that guy and his Jazz was out of this world. 
Of the basses I've played, the best sounding are these. The Dingwall was my fave, and the others are in no particular order:
1. Dingwall Super J (P/J pickups);
2. Guild Starfire;
3. My Fender Jazz;
4. My G&L SB-2;
5. DiPinto Belvedere;
6. G&L L-2000; and
7. various Fender P-basses, including mine.
Of the basses I've heard live played by others, I've been most impressed by Rickenbackers, some Fenders, and Fodera Emperors. Other than the Foderas, I generally haven't liked modern active basses I've heard.

made for some guy in Iowa. It had a butternut body and wenge/purple heart neck, wenge fingerboard. Unbelievable, I was drooling when I heard it. Best live tone in concert is Meshell Ndegeocello's Fender Jazz during her "Dance of the infidel" tour... of course she has a lot to do with that sound.
My favorite is the MTD U.S.A tone (which chaps like Norm Stockton and Jerry Watts do very well). Unfortunately, due to the scale length, the string spacing, and the weight, I could never find one I was comfortable playing.
I also liked John Patticucci's old Yamaha sound a lot (the 34" scale model).

What do you think of my tone here ?
It's a 75 MIM Fender Jazz Reissue with Badass ii Bridge and Fender Custom Shop 60's Pickups, all ran throuh a Sansamp PDDI on 'SVT' setting and an Eden WT400 Head....
* I reckon i nailed a greta tone here. Bridge pickup off, tone rolled all the way down....Nuthin but Bass baby...

Early 1980's Larry Graham concert using his white Fender Jazz bass thru his Mamoth amplification system. A wall of speakers behind him delivered nothing but ass and glass. His thumps felt like a punch to your chest while his plucks sounded like marbles hitting a glass window....but with lots of twang.
One of the nicest sounding basses that I've heard was a Lakland Darryl Jones (if I recall correctly) on YouTube. The guy had replaced the pickups with the Delano JMVC 4 FE/M2 set. They're the Jazz pickups with large 9.5mm pole pieces. It sounded really good.
I can't find the video anymore, unfortunately. The guy was wearing a Target shirt. If anyone knows where I could find it, I'd love to see it again.
On a related note, all of the Lakland Jazz bass Invalid Link Removed that I've listened to sound incredible. I base my opinions on the samples with roundwound strings and both pickups on full, though. Flats sound fine on them but not nearly as lively as the rounds.

It's got to be the '65 jazz I just played in seattle. The tone was the classic bass tone, I just couldn't enough of it. PLayed great too, and looked awesome with it's super worn neck and candy apple red finsih.
The weird thing is that I played it Guitar Center. The one there has a whole wall of vintage instruments, which is super cool. I'd never think a Guitar center would ever buy instruments that have to be actually be cared for...

Christian McBride playing some sort of Fretless J-bass
although he puts on some sort of chorus during the solo which is kinda annoying
I went into GC years ago, and they had a used Pedulla. The only thing wrong with it was that it was old, and the finish on the top was all cracked and flaking. Damage I have never really seen before! They wanted $800 for it, and I am still kicking myself for not doing everything I could to buy it.
This bass was hands down the best tone of any electric I have ever heard. Intense! Slap, finger, thumb, pick style...front PUP, Back PUP...nothing sounded bad on this bass!
Contrary to those who suggest that it is always the player, not the bass, the tone on this thing was such that I was so much more musically inspired. Since everything sounded good, I felt much freerer on this instrument, able to pull things off that normally would not have sounded as good.
The other bass that really, really knocked me out was one I would not have thought of: A Musicman bongo. Unlike it's cousins, this bass had a myriad of tones available and they were all really good, and really varied!
