Big Cabs Club

Ha! I love this thread. Sooo macho.

You guys do realise life has moved on since 1964 when I started and you can buy more powerful speaker chassis's? The reason we had 4x12 and 8x12 (Yes I was there in the little Marshall shop with the first guys who used those cabs) the reason we used so many spekaers is that they only handled 25 watts and had almost no cone excusion you could see. So 8x12" gave you 200 watts but probably only about 50 watts that were useable before distortion and clipping set in. If you got one of those 4x12s and put it alongside one of my current 3015 loaded cabs - the 3015 would blow it away by a huge margin.

Admit it guys these big cabs are about stage dressing. (I even went to a gig a couple of years ago where most of the cabs the organiser had stacked up had no drivers in them at all - it was just to make it look like a festival gig! Ha!! That's absolutely true - couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the backs of the cabs!!)

With powerful drivers and cheap Asian built power amps, big is on the way out. Get some life size prints of stacks made up and pin them to the stage wall - much more transportable.

Went to an Arena gig last year where there were no amps on the backline, no foldback to be seen - everything went through the ariel PA cabs. Guess the guys had in ear monitors. But no stage amp cabs at all. Just huge lighting rig (250 computer controlled swivle spots) with PA cabs like Makie 450s, everywhere up high. All eyes on the star - not where are the stacks?

Tactician.... I don't think you're going to get much traction here. Why'd you come into this thread? Just to bash?

Some people like big cabs. Either because they like monstrous volume or they just like the tone. Who are you to say that their preferences aren't valid? That's extremely presumptuous.

Those newer micro-heads & neo drivers might be lighter & smaller... some may even be louder...but they aren't voiced like my rig. My tone KILLS and I NEVER have to turn up over 6 to be heard loud & clear over a heavy-handed drummer and a pair of tube guitar stacks. Plus my cabs & drivers are durable as all heck. There's a reason Geezer Butler swears by EV's, and if it's good enough for him (who's been doing it longer than I've been alive) it's good enough for me.

Never heard that before. :rollno:

Ha! I love this post. Sooo troll.

You do realise we know what year it is, and despite what trend is currently popular regarding the hyper-mega-light-weight set ups, we LIKE these big rigs and the sounds they produce. I mean come on, why even make that post in a thread chock full of people who obviously like sizable rigs. Stage dressing my bum, we actually use these amps. But hey, I suppose everybody's input in valuable, but maybe it would do better off in another thread. Maybe Mini Rigs of doom?

Was there supposed to be a point to this, besides hating? :eyebrow::rollno:

The Acoustic 215 is still with me (the V4-B isn't so I guess it's time to remove the big "A")?

Does the G-K 412 qualify as well?

Man that 215 is smokin' how does it sound? Do you know what kind of drivers those are?

And never try to obfuscate the brand of the gear you rock, here at BCC we are proud of what sounds good! :bassist:

Remember the more pictures the better!! :D

I've played some super small bars where I was forced to bring my mini rig: 2 Epi UL112s each powered by a GB Shuttle 6.0.... it did the job, but I like being able to feel the bass too.

My favorite gig memories so far are of outdoor shows where I had no PA support. One in particular: an ampitheater festival. None of the bassists knew ahead of time that we'd have no support... some brought combo amps. I had my Berg NV215, Dr Bass 2460D and 1900 watts :bassist:, needless to say we were told that we were the best sounding band that night and got many subsequent gigs.

Just thought I would do a full update of our membership list (since I can no longer update the first post.) And if "Tactician" wants to he/she can start pm'ing everyone on this list about their sucky cabs... :D
