Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

That's just what I was thinking. I might be oversimplifying, but it seems that, even with all of that kit, he's still got problems with dispersion (well, he is running each 2x cab horizontally) and he's needing to run four cabs to reproduce the range of his bass. I know the drivers in the Flex aren't time-aligned with a computer, and I know that the EQ curve isn't perfectly flat, but I bet a couple (or the 15" or 2x15") would go low enough well enough to compete with his 2x18 on the bottom. In lieu of passive crossovers, his rig would easily bi-amp or triamp, time-align, and individually EQ the different sections of the cab, if that degree of control was desired, and I bet the resulting sound/feel would be better. I was thinking that this is one of those pros it would be cool to get a Big E to.
I'm sure his needs differ than mine (duh, he's in Phish, I'm not); if his rig is only for him to hear and they want to minimize spill across the stage, maybe the limited dispersion is intentional and a bonus -- and I'm sure their setup is insanely sophisticated and that there are factors I haven't considered, but, listening to him talk about it, I got the feeling it could be improved upon!

Amazing attention to detail Very focused guy. Cool personality. I have only briefly touched base with that band, for one reason or another on youtube. I have to try again. Not been hooked yet
Mike Gordon is a very nice man and a great player. I have no idea what it takes, equipment wise, to play arenas but if anyone is open to new ideas that would be Mike. Someone from BigE should get in touch with him and see if he'd be willing to give a listen to their kit.
If BigE can displace Meyer Sound gear in a bass (or any other) rig I will consider them officially Arrived.
Anybody here know Mike? I'd love to put something together for him. For his needs I feel very confident that I can nail it.
IMHO, Mike A. is spot on with the notion that the most hi-fi amplification is not likely to be the most satisfying electric bass cab.
Heck, why do so many bassists cream about old Sunn or Acoustic rigs (both of which I owned, back in the day)? Because of the character they impart to EB, as a particular instrument; there's nothing hi-fi about them, as amplifiers of analog music signals!

I don't know Mike personally although I have chatted bass with him a few times. If all else fails you can always try his management.

You never know. I am a fEARful self builder, and I still have one, and really appreciate Greenboy throwing those plans up for free and coaching people along during the building process. They are now my second favorite, and I have never heard the newer authorized builder designs. For me it's a "can't we all just get along" world. If everyone could be more like Duke, helping you, even though you are taking some of the market share, away from his bass cab products, then the end users all benefit. I know it's a dog eat dog world out there in business sometimes, but some of us just want to have the best product within our budget.
If the next greatest thing comes along in a couple of years with as great a pedigree of involved participants as this product, budget allowing I will try one and report back to the bass player community. If I am playing a xenopheros cab 2 years from now that is built with nanotechnology and made on a 3d printer I will still talk highly of MASoundworks and BigE as I still do of my fEARful experience. Seems simple to me. Maybe not for some

Back when the Big E project was just starting, I remember some folks arguing the cabs couldn't perform as well as Mike said, because traditional loudspeaker design theory said they couldn't. Lots of claims it was just the expectancy effect/confirmation bias thing. Kinda reminded me of that apocryphal comment by a Soviet apparatchik, "But, comrade--theory makes it impossible."
It caught my eye, because IMHO (with a little help from heavy hitters like Karl Popper) scientific knowledge always should be considered tentative, provisional. If at any point in time the current state of scientific knowledge is taken as dogma--absolute, total, beyond question--it then becomes an impediment to further knowledge gain, and those cool breakthrough moments (short of paradigm shifts, but big advances in what's known) can't happen. Because, comrade, theory makes it impossible.
Blah, blah, blah. But I also kept remembering the first time I heard a Bose Wave Radio on a shelf in a kitchen gadget store and thought, "How the @#$!!@ does that all that great, evenly dispersed bass come out of that tiny box?" Yeah, some kind of super-trick baffling, uh-huh...wonder if a gig-worthy bass cab could do something like that...
Guess the theory gotta catch up, y'know?

As far as what these cabs can do , I dont think you can even try to use some kind of standardized rule. They just do what they do and do it well. Ive banked 3 gigs on my MAS112 and have been impressed each time .twice outdoors and once indoors at a room I have never been happy with as far as how I sound.until now the MAS112 fit the room perfectly all I had to do was back off the bass knob about 2 clicks and perfect no boom .my bands agree its a keeper for sure.
Music in the courtyard. The grey case is a Gator Protechtor accessories case that is the perfect size for the 26+WA+pedalboard. The lid has enough height it would fit a 46 by itself as well. Bass and stuff strapped to the top and il now one-tripping from the car, and. Now not worried about dinging up the speaker, faster setup, and its the perfect stand! Very happy.

I'm taking the plunge and having Leland build me some BigE cabs for my home stereo/theater. I've had a crappy stereo for most of my life ("I'd rather spend money on gear to make music than on gear to play it back"). I've reached a point in my life where - hey! - I can get some decent gear for listening to music too.
And BigE fits the bill.

That is gonna be nice! I hooked up my 46 3 way bass cab to my little all in one PA yesterday, in honor of my new 55 LCD, and played the New York Cross roads DVD. I thought sure the neighbors would call the gendarmes! It sounded great. A specifically designed system through a proper amp will kill!
