Big E Speakers Part 4 - Quadraphenia

The LPT is com[parable to speakers with an efficiency of about 102db. And yes--the entire frequency range from around 120 hz to around 3khz. Most speakers either pick the "sweet spot" (as far as sensitivity) or figure from 200 to 2khz. All speakers drop of a bit below that figure, but the MVW cabs do so less than other speakers.

As far as sound comparisons---

the MAS112 with the 18sound woofer
I wouldn't say "leaner" in the bass---it's just not boomy and doesn't have that extra "warmth" in the form of a slight boost between 150 and 250hz. Actually, very powerful in the low end---but great clarity. The mids are a bit more forward and a bit more aggressive. Better for "piano string" clarity. And can be driven by around 300 watts. 400 to 500 is better, but 300 will work fine. 150 tube watts work fine. Can be eq'd to more of the balance of the Faital version.

the MAS112 with the Faital 4 ohm (or 8 ohm) woofer
Bigger, fuller low end. Very controlled and punchy, but a stronger, warmer balance. A bit more natural mids, but plenty articulate in the mids. Very powerful and balanced. I'm more of a pizzicato r&b and funk guy. I ;like a more hifi and modern take on the traditional balance for those types of music. This cab is better for me. Can be eq'd to more like the 18sound version.

the MAS112 LPT

Incredible clarity of the bass envelope between 120 and 300hz.A slight bit warmer than the 18sound but a bit leaner than the Faital. Slightly forward (less than the 18sound) but very natural and balanced mids. Doesn't go quite as low as the other 112's but the B string still sounds very focused and deep. Doesn't go quite as loud as the other 112's but moves about twice as much air as the 109. Probably my favorite sound of the 112's within it's limits. It would work well on my loudest gigs.Sounds the best of the 112's with tubes. The tubes add a bit of thickness and warmth to the low end. It does sound great with SS amps, too. I boost the bass by a notch. Sounded great at gig volume with a Fender Bassman (a relatively anemic 50 tube watts ). Broke our eardrums with 100 tube watts and had really great sound and headroom with the 150 watt Shaw. Iv'e driven it with 150 solid state watts with no problems. I've also put 400 SS watts into it and it worked great.
Thank Mike ,
So the LPT is a little less beefy down low compared to the other 112"s, but more than the 109?
And louder?
Is it woofer only, or does it include 3 or 4 inchers

So does that mean my MAS112LPT has become your MAS112LPT?

:D

No--just wanted to test it. I was going to ship it but my new grill manufacturer shipped last week. To those that don't know---as of January 1st my grill manufacturer decided to stop making grills. With no notice and grills on order. I went back to my previous supplier who was twice as much---but I can't find anyone cheaper. I bent some grills for current cabs. For the smaller cabs they turned out fine, but Steve wanted a full size grill. Well---that one turned out ok---but I wasn't pleased. I checking with the tracking from California. The full size grill should be here today or tomorrow.

One nice thing about the grills from Reliable (the source I'm using again) is that their grills are 16 gauge as opposed to the 18 gauge that I was using. So---a bit heavier and more durable.

I'm building a MAS112LPT for myself now. I'm using all 3/8" Okume plywood. Seeing if it's more durable than 1/2 poplar ply that I'm using. The okume is a very expensive plywood but the best for speaker building, I think. A cab in 3/8 Okume will be about the same weight as the 1/2" poplar ply cabs that I'm currently making.

Just to be clear, for those reading along, Mike and I have spoken at length upon several subjects including cabs.

Just pokin' fun because I can.

Well maybe a little worried since those tube amps started rolling over to Mike's.
I suspected and now it is confirmed he was going to build a MAS112LPT for himself.

When the little jewel arrives it will be driven by a Matchless Thunderman.
Plus there are seven basses to try through the new rig.

You may not see a post from me for a week.
And then I can try all three MAS Cabs with the Glockenklang Heart Rock II.

That might be heard in Appleton if I open a couple of windows.

Thump away gents. It is such a great time to be a bass player.

So Mike, do you know what a stock Okume 112LPT with the thicker (but still bikini) grill will weigh? Are we still in the 50lb +/- ballpark? ..and give some thought to what it might cost, too, please. Thanks!

In 1/2" Okume the 112LPT would still be right around 50#. If I went to 3/8" Okume it would drop to around 45#. I just built a 3/8" Okume 112LPT that I'm going to beat the crap out of. I think that the 3/8 will be fine. As I had stated, 3/8 Okume is as strong or stronger than 1/2" poplar.

I think it would be inappropriate to post prices here. I posted a breakdown of 112 prices on the Michael Arnopol Soundworks Facebook page.

haven't hooked it all up yet, but couldn't resist the photo-op.

Yikes!
I'm building a 210 Flex modular right now. This time it's for me. (i always say this but so far four 210 Flex's that were intended for me found different final destinations). I'll try it with the 112. I might even try the top section alone crossed over with the 112. (high and low pass). Just for S's and g's.

Make the cab pink and put your initials on it in neon green. That way you can be reasonably sure it will stay yours. Gigging in certain venues might prove difficult, though.

112 + Flex Mod is intriguing in a don't need it but want to hear it sort of way. In an I want to play an outdoor stage kind of way. Actually, I'd love to get my 112 outside and see what it can do. My last experience doing that way was with my former 66. It will be some time before circumstances allow for outdoor playing, though!

Pulled this from FB, it looks like a mighty 'fridge killer':

"The Mighty MAS115!

Actually a prototype that we built. but Tom and Steve decided to try a 215 which is not-too-much bigger. This puppy is 42" high by 20" wide by 24" deep. It goes about as loud as two of my 112's but deeper. I had only about 10 minutes to crank it facing out of my garage with the door open. I knew that the police would come, but I'd played it loud inside to check out the sound and make sure everything was working ok. I got it to max volume. It's the crazy-loudest I've ever played. This goes about as loud as an SVT but adding another octave down low. If I limited it to where an SVT would roll off, it would be a lot louder. It moves around 1750cc's of air.

It actually sounds a lot like the MAS112 with the 18sound woofer.(this is the 15" version) Six Faital 4 inchers. It does sound bigger and deeper than the 112 which would be expected. It's heavy, I guess, but not against what you'd compare it to. About 90# I think. Very easy to move with the Ampeg towel bar and heavy duty casters. To be honest, I'd get help moving up and down stairs,( maybe I should put those full length skid rails (or whatever they're called on) but it's an easy lift to get through doorways. (only 20" wide)."

A couple of nights ago my sons band played here. Due to pack space they didn't bring the bass players 66. We hooked up a Rache15,which is the pa kissin cousin of the 115, for a practice session before the gig. It was damn good. I bet this cab is a monster.

I recently had a remarkably similar situation and outcome...
Ski area gig, bad blizzard, poor roads, and so eventually we pull up to the venue right at showtime, packed full of warm, happy skiers. The bass cab (not an MAS ...not yet, anyway) is way in the front of the truck, but the Rache12 sub is right at the back door (and it turns out there's house PA). So, instant Rache12 bass cab (powered by a GK MB Fusion 500). Man, that thing killed, even without any mid-speakers! I think it's a 3012 in there, but Leland will need to confirm that. More MVW magic at work!
