Big E Speakers pt 3

The MVW cabs are very accommodating of amp changes (MA48) in my case. My tube and solid state all sound great through it. My go to bass has hot passive pups, and has well worn flats. I really appreciate what Mike is expressing re: the attack of the note. Blues SRV Hendrix Heaven. Oh and funk for days. BIG, but clean and tight.

Cabpalooza mk2. A little messing about with some various combinations. Amps: Puma 500 (Steuart's), Monique, Minnie, prototype 40W tube and 600W class D. Cabs: 45-110, Baer ML112, TC112. Basses: Some Foderas and a Rob Allen.

Impressions - three differently voiced cabinets. The TC112 interestingly enough was kind of the "middle ground." The Baers are very upper-mid forward and have a rather "open" low mid (not thick). The 45-110 combo was somewhat the opposite, more relaxed in the upper mids, thicker in the lows and low mids. 45-110 is more "punch", Baer is more "bite". The TC112 is in-between, nothing particularly emphasized. I actually kind of preferred running the 45-110 combo vertical and next to each other, but I will admit that I'm really used to my Baers so I typically try to recreate that sound.

You should have the pole tomorrow. It changes exactly what you're talking about. It really shifts the balance away from the upper bass/lower mids and opens up that area. When you run them vertically like you said you reduce the floor coupling and that does some of the same.

Thumbandfingers MAS 48 had the most devastating "modern take on a P Bass sound " that I've heard---and being driven with a GK MB800. (is that the right model#?) What it sounded like to me was a great studio recording of a P. I might try to get one of those amps. I've always kind-of-hated the GK sound but with the Big E's---I've changed my mind.

Funk for days.

That's the thing with MVW, (at least mine), (maybe gonna hear Coyote's 2x6 at an up coming GTG soon), but I have yet to play any head through my MAS 48, that was not sweet! Funny thing is you put me off of the Streamliner 900, through these, but I always bring it as my backup for gigs. One of these days I will just hook it up and find for my style it sounds great through the MAS48.
The Fender super Bassman 300 is my fave so far, followed closely by the SVT7pro. The tubealicious SB300 just gives it another girth dimension, that must be what you and Spiritbass and TomBowlus are talking about re the Reeves.
And of course the Monique which the wonderful Jules brings to our infrequent GTG's.

I've actually had great luck with the Streamliner- particularly with a P. The bright setting on the flex really fills in the upper mids that can be lacking with the Benz. Max out the mids at 2.5k and I was able to get a tone similar to my mb800 running my active Muckelroy, just a bit warmer and thicker. I have changed my tubes, so YRMV.

Killer!! I thoroughly enjoyed that, nice work!

Was loosey goosey and tighty righty! Funkalicious.
No ones home video cams or cell phone vids can repro what these or Duke's or Greenboy's cabs can lavish on a club performance. Just give a little tease.I don't want to give a feed to the soundman/board. Want the folks to hear what my fridge slayer is putting out. Of course I am not playing stadiums.

Yeah--it was ok if your into that sort of thing.

Seriously---that cracks me up because it sounded like I was listening to myself. Similar sound and approach. These two old white dudes must have been separated at birth! (although I'm 8 years older I think)

Beautiful playing, man. It sounded like you and I both learned from Anthony Jackson how much tension can be created by repeated half or quarter notes. The longer you hold out, the stronger the tension release. (I'm talking about funk bass playing you perves) I'm sorry, I know that I'm the guy that made 'em but did y'all check out how tastefully he'd hit the B string and how huge and focused it sounded? That's the thing about the 210 for me--usually I have to make a choice of whether I want to go huge or tight and focused. Now I know both are possible. I know I'm biased (I did put on some good headphones) but that much power and presence through a camera 20 feet (or whatever) away?

Oh well----admittedly I'm prejudiced.

BTW---I'm into in ear headphones. When I'm working I listen to music or books on tape all day . I just bought a pair of $50 in ear headphones recommended by a guy that reviews them that blew him away. A Danish gaming company called Steel Series. I have a pair of custom $1100 JH13's. (best in ears on the planet) The Steel Series are no joke. And $50! Unbelieveable low end and tiny and comfortable.

If y'all are curious at what the 21O sounds like in practical
application someone had a single camera at last nights show
that sounds like I remember....
Disclaimer...
I was last minute subbing and my playing is a little loose..

The bass sound is quite righteous. Nice.

OK, but what are the details on the cab? Sadly, the Big E website is a bit non-intuitive. Mike, I looked at your page, and I don't see the 210. I did find it here in this thread, and on FB, sort of.
How can one get a ballpark idea of pricing?

I think the guy had a SLR camera in video mode with some
kind of mic on top so more than a cell phone.......
Also I have to shout out to Chopper Anderson at Alien Audio for making such funky beast of a bass. Also the monique and the BIg E are great together. I am now unsure if there is anywhere
else to go as far as gear? Maybe a matching Demeter power
amp?

A NOTE TO THE MODS---THIS IS A RESPONSE TO A DIRECT QUESTION

I have to apologize. I (and we) have been sooooo busy designing , tweaking and tweaking and tweaking,....... Steve at Big E has been enormously helpful. Beside from spending so much time with the implementation process he's doing the web site. The problem is me. I have to give him all of the information. Which I will. I'm starting to get decent pictures right now.

The MAS 210Flex (that's the 210 cab) utilizes two new 10 inchers from Eminence that have twice the output of a conventional 10 due to the fact that they are able to get more than twice the excursion of a conventional 10. And they go much, much lower. The Big E tecnology allows us to harness the rear wave of the speaker, amplify it a bit, and recombine with the front wave. So the 210 Flex goes about the same volume as an 810. Or if you're looking at some of the upper end cabs (Berg and others) like a 610.

OK --technobabble time---
What we're able to achieve---these speakers don't excite room resonances nearly as much as other speakers. So the "boom" and overhang that you normally get in live situations is dramatically reduced. And the way the speaker is loaded is unique. It has more of the tautness and focus of a sealed box but with extension that rivals most reflex cabs. There is a complex series of chambers behind the speaker.

The unique things about the 210---
It's really 2 cabs kindof stacked on top of eachother. The lower cab has the rear vortex/waveguide optimized for the woofers. The upper portion house two 6 1/2" midranges that have a vortex/waveguide optimized for their frequency range. These are amazing midrange drivers from Italy. They have a frequency response from 100hz to 8khz. So---we can cross them over much lower than most mids. There are pricey, studio quality mids. These are cross firing across each other.
The tweeters are also pricey studio quality super tweeters from Italy. They are used in many of the uber expensive PA speakers.

We have this crazy switching system (4 switches) that subtly to dramatically change the sound/response of the cab. They do all sorts of things like changing crossover points, phase, series/parallel and at one point engaging a speaker protection/compression bulb. I can play a gig and on one tune get a huge vintage studio-sounding P Bass sound and hit a switch and on the next tune get a grindy Bernard Edwards Music man sound. Or disengage the tweeters and engage the bulb and get an SVT sort of sound. Or get a very neutral hifi sound.

An other thing these cabs do is get pretty crazy dispersion. Not just that, but the sound changes volume MUCH less with with distance. I can literally be directly on the side of the cab 10 feet away and hear myself amazingly well.Or I can set up with the drummer and me on opposite sides of the bandstand and the drummers always comment on how well they can hear me.

The Mas 210Flex is not a tiny cab. It's 32" high 26" wide and 14 1/2" deep. It weighs around 72#. More like a 410. But it will compete with something a lot bigger.

I'm still doing introductory pricing until there are more out there. I'll pm prices.

Mike,
Are these the in-ears you are talking about?[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
Just looking for a good set. I have tried several cans and they all eventually hurt my ears, not with sound but pressure on my ears.
