Big E Speakers pt 3

Is there a support group for bassists who don't need/can't justify a Big E speaker, but want one anyway? I'm not a pro, I just play at home nowadays, mostly for the therapeutic benefits of bass playing. I've been following the Big E threads most of this year though and the techno-geek in me finds the whole thing fascinating. I want one. I must have a worse case of G.A.S. than I thought.

I'm half tempted to contact Mike A. about his "introductory pricing", but using a Big E as a practice rig would just seem so wrong. I think I need professional help. :eyebrow:

I am working very hard to improve my financial situation for this reason. Not primarily for a Big-E but a 210 Flex is high on tye GAS list fo' sho'.

Say, what's a good amp for that anyway? Seems some folk like the Puma but I'm more partial to old big iron like a British made Trace Elliot. Thoughts?

Get the best info you can from Mike Leland and Duke for a home music speaker that you can gig out too music sounds great through these

I don't need them but they sure are nice on the ears!

If you're ever passing through Dayton, OH let me know. I've got some early revision 26's that are soon to be upgraded to current spec.

When my fascination with the MVW technology got the best of me, I initially ordered a 26, but when I heard about the Flex series, Mike graciously let me change my order to a 110. This or the 210 are serious GAS enders. The sound and feel of this new level of performance is inspirational to my playing and a whole lot of fun! For me, worth every penny. :D

Mike has several models that would make killer dual-use cabs. Leland's are dual-use but more aimed at PA than at bass guitar, and mine are not dual-use - they're for home audio only.

Okay offtopic a bit but... my wife has heard every speaker I've designed over the past decade or so, because they all start out in her living room. She wants to open a dance studio, and the speakers she wants in it are the MVW speakers that are similar to Mike's MAS210. She says they just make her want to dance more than any of my other speakers have. My other speakers are all duly insulted, just so you know.

It's all about that attack and decay. I can see why she she wants them. There's just something visceral about them. It gets in your head.
A pair of event horizons in a dance studio. :eek:

Seems like the difference between Class D & AB amp topology, has either disappeared or gotten much smaller than it was a few years back (depending on who you ask).

There are still some True Believers left though.

Just about any amp that sounds good into a balanced cabinet should sound good into a Big E.

As with all sound systems, personal preference plus component synergy still are the key to what works well enough on a gig to keep you smiling.

My 1st gig with the MA 48 was with a svt7pro, G&LSB1 MFD pickups with flats on a graphite neck no less. Everyone in the band was in Wow mode. Lately I have been using all tube Fender and the SVT7pro. The band likes both. Mike mentioned Streamliner is too much of a good thing. Hard to find a head that won't work with MVW I am guessing.

I don't know on the bass side, but on the PA side the digital switchers just don't sound as good. Our recommended amplifiers are Ashlys, which are kind of a hybrid between the two. We've tried many models and styles. I have not tried the truly high end digital amps, e.g. Lab Gruppen and such. Just a tad out of my price range.

It seems most of difference appears in the upper mids. I'd say right at the top of the range of a bass. Sounds cleaner with a transformer in the circuit providing that current.

:D God help us all. Make sure you use a really expensive power cable, and $500 speaker cables also, to really get that pure tone!

Yes, the Reeves C225 is my total fave head with both the 110 and 210 Flex. Those "stadium lows" really shine with these cabs. In the class-D market, my fave so far has been the Puma 900, which also has a goosed low end.
