Biking '10 part 2

Roads I like; angry motorists giving me no room whatsoever when they pass in big-ass 4X4s I do not like. The local roadies in my neck of the woods have completely ruined things for everyone- riding 2 & 3 abreast when there's NO reason to do so, rolling stop signs & lights en mass, etc.

There is one road that I'd consider riding on. The Natchez Trace Parkway is basically a scenic route that comes from nowhere and goes nowhere. People on there aren't in a hurry and the speed limit is enforced religiously.

Everywhere else seems insane to try and ride on it.

Isn't that the place where those a**hats blew some weird smoke on a rider and was all over the news?

I like roads, I only ride on roads :) However I'd like to have a mountain bike, so I could do some with friends since nobody does road bikes over my neck of the woods. I have seen a total of 5 road bikers, 2 of them are the ones that gave me the road bike bug and 3 strangers... only 3.

Completely true story; a few weeks ago, I'm out on a slow town ride on my fixed when some yahoos in a battered (and noisy) Camaro pull up next to me; the guy in the passenger seat yells "HEY!!" at me, apparently trying to startle me (I heard it coming up behind me and was half-expecting this to happen), and they drive off laughing. Three blocks later, I catch up to the car at a red light, and just as the light turns green, I roll up to it on the right side, lean over sorta, and yell "WHAT?!?" in the open window. It startled the driver so much that he rear-ended the car in front of him...that car was a police black 'n white.

Every now and then, the universe smiles on you...

Ken, that was karma on steroids.
hey, on the Campy stuff- I wouldn't want to break up the bike, though it's not complete. I'll be in & out today but if you are really interested I imagine we could work something out. I have to say that username is ahead of you in line, moreless.

Had a 13.4 mile time trial last night as part of a local and unofficial race series. Very strong winds and not a bad performance on my part, despite a complete lack of riding lately. I hope to do the same race in about a month if the weather holds out. I think my speed was abotu 21.6 on a flat, but windswept course.

I once hit a little curb jumb on a weird, 60's Japanese 3-speed(think Teisco on 26X1 3/8" steel rims); slightly inebriated & wearing Huarache sandals, I landed just so that my ankle somehow collided w/the 52T chainring, resulting in a nice incision. I really should've had stitches, but wasn't thinking real clearly... ah youth :rollno:

Edit: PMing Mudd & username...

Well I found some 44 BG Pro's and - too big. So, now I'm looking for a 43.5 and 43 to try. I used to have a real narrow foot but things change over time and my forefoot is spreading. The fit on my old Genius 4 w/ Superfeet was great - not as good these days.

Oddly enough my Lange ski boots still fit fine and that's a real narrow toe box so the Sidi must be the Bruno Magli of the bike shoe world ... beg's the question 'What would OJ ride ?" :-)

Advice re skinned knuckles: Expect the nut to break free/wrench to slip/etc- where will your hand go when this happens? If something is in it's way, especially something sharp, adjust your position so that your hand will have a clear path. Experience(read *bloody knuckles*)- the best teacher.

Been there, done that, and I have the stitch-scars to prove it....

Gloves aren't gonna help much here, actually...best advise I can give is to put the chain on the big ring before pulling the pedal off and use a LONG pedal wrench.

Pedal wrenches dont work't on most shimano mtn spds. They use either an 8 or 10mm allen wrench going through the back.

For me it's usually an allen wrench and an old seatpost for leverage.

OOOooohhhh, so that's what's going on...I've scratch-built more than one wrench specifically for those pedals; a proper-sized allen-head socket brazed/tigged onto a piece of bar-stock works wonders.

And I gave up complaining to Shimano about that crappy design years ago...I tried, believe me I tried!
