Biking '10 part 2

Have you tried the double tap shifters? I like the technology, but I can see myself mis-shifting a lot on them.

Just ask Andy Schleck :D (Too soon?)

I think Scheck's problem was more to do with switching to the small ring while cross chaining.

Sram's double tap seems interesting, but I've known guys who have double tapped wrong, which shifted up 2 gears instead of down 1 gear.

After using Campy for many years, no plans on changing. I've been using a 23-11 for a while, although I've been toying with the idea of 25-11 since there's a much more gradual spread.

Since I rarely need anything beyond a 12t and still have Record 9 stuff (I'm retro like that...), I've been using either a 13/26 (for the mtns) or a custom-built 12/23 - both give me straight-block teeth where usable (and both include my beloved 17t) but still give me a couple of softer gears, just in case. I do wish that Campy had a 25t rather than the 26, tho.

...34x23 gearing...
I've thought about going to a compact crank now and then, but finding one w/177.5 arms and is still as hugely stiff as my 2nd-gen Ritchey road cranks is gonna be difficult. I do swap out the 53/38 rings for 48/34 for stuff like the Death Ride tho, but I also spin out at about 32 mph with that set-up and pretty much end up coasting off the mtns on those days.

Yeah, I could see that combo being problematic to order. I'm pretty sure I'm using 170mm crank arms, but I'm a pretty small rider.

Went to a gig last friday on bike with all the gear !
Did it a couple of times for rehersal but it was a first for a gig.

20 miles from home , with the amp, the VB99+FC300 , a bass and spare clothes.
All fits on the Bob and weighted around 80 pounds.

It was not enough of a ride to be tired for the gig.

Nice, where else did you worked? I mean what other bike related gigs you had :p
Oh lordy...I have to remember all that?

Actually, it really isn't terribly 'oh WOW!'...besides Ritchey, a number of shop gigs...probably the most notable being the Wheelsmith, Palo Alto (the now-defunct retail/brick 'n mortar shop side of Wheelsmith Mfg, the wheelbuilders and spke mfgr)...I was at various times either sales, service writer, mechanic, or service manager for them and later for Mike's Bikes, Palo Alto (who bought the Wheelsmith, after we/it was about to go under...don't ask - it's not a pretty story); I worked for Avocet for awhile doing inside sales, which primarily taught me that I don't like doing inside sales; I've done race support for a few teams now and again; I've also worked for Waterford Precision Cycles at our trade show in Las Vegas a few times (Richard and Debra Schwinn are friends of mine); right now, I'm actually rather removed from the main-line industry, but I do some repair/wheelbuilding here at home for side cash and a little beta-testing of gear for a couple of companies .

One thing I do rather regret; Mavic offered to send me to Europe for one season to try out for a neutral support position, but for various reasons that made sense at the time I passed on it. Ever since, I've wondered if that was a mistake.
