Black Sabbath or Judas Priest?

I gotta say I’d go with Sabbath, although Priest is pretty great. One thing of note, without JP, we would have no Heavy Metal Parking Lot.
JP is fun catchy metal.
BS is dark with great riffs as well.
Neither is really bass music as I see it, but there's more bass "meat on the bones" with BS I suppose.

Damn, it took me 3 years to get out of 10th grade, and now I'm drug right back into it.
Ah, memories. I was one of the high school's geeky kids until one day some of the cooler kids came around, looked through the smoky gray dust cover all turntables had in those days, and saw I'd been listening to Master of Reality.

For me, it's Judas Priest - hands down.
I love the two-guitar-attack.
I've never really been able to get into single guitar bands. They're fine in the studio (extra guitars tracked in), but they sound incredibly "thin" live (to me).

Sabbath was incredibly influential music and they had a handful of influential albums that introduced generations of people to heavy metal.
Judas Priest flew the heavy metal flag, created and evolved, went through trial-and-error, ups and downs, to put together an incredible body of work and legacy that I would say is surpassed by none. As of their last album, they were still evolving.
For me, Judas Priest are the "greater" band.

consistency is something that no-one ever consider and its so important !!
Firstly, they aren't really bands that would have been compared to each other. Sabbath are an earlier generation of hard rock/heavy metal that's best output was well behind them by the time Priest ever released an album.
But answering the question anyhow:
At their best, Sabbath is "better." But Priest is also damned good, and over their career, had more great albums and more great songs.
With Sabbath, my favorite album, BY FAR, is their first one. Then the third. Then the second. I do still like Vol. 4, but it's definitely on the decline vs. their previous three. I don't even bother owning anything after that (though I do know most of them pretty well).
With Priest, I love their first seven albums, all the way through. But I do cut them off hard, starting after Point of Entry. I can't hang with Screaming for Vengeance, or anything after it. It was as if they instantly got horrible, starting with that album. The production is garbage to me.

Definitely Sabbath for me.
I like a lot of Priest, but they never captured my ear in the ways Sabbath does. Just a different sound.

The early Judas Priest records are amazing, like "Rocka Rolla" and "Sad Wings Of Destiny". I just love the whole sound of those records, really thick old-school guitar sound. Quite different from their newer more trebly and earpiercing stuff that I'm not that fan of.
I said Sabbath but mostly because I'm not really super familiar with Priest. I need to check them out more. But even still, Sabbath is classic. Considering what other bands I love (Soundgarden, Melvins, old Smashing Pumpkins, lots of stoner/doom stuff), they're absolutely essential.
Regarding overall influence and being pioneers, definitley Black Sabbath.
They started a bit earlier, became big before Priest did, had been a world wide touring band for several years before Priest followed.
They are called the founding fathers of Heavy Metal for a reason, I'd say.
Regarding my personal taste, definitely Judas Priest.
Can't stand Ozzy's voice, never got used to the early Sabbath sound in general either. I like the Headless Cross cd, which doesn't really have an awful lot to do with classic Sabbath. Priest, on the other hand, have one of the two or three most amazing singers in heavy music ever and just appeal to me on a completely different level than Sabbath ever have or ever will. Seen Priest ten times, never seen Sabbath live and never had the urge to do so.
Audio not that great but interesting nonetheless.

Yup, I've seen the videos of him playing upright bass with anson funderburgh
I knew there was another reason to like him besides his great films and shows.
HE A BASS PLAYER!!!
