I am mid 50's now and I started listening to Sabbath when I was 10. Tony Iommi's personal story also is a great one, inspirational for me. Against all odds and goes beyond genre or music. The reality show the Osbourne'a was disappointing to me.

Black Sabbath or Judas Priest?

I voted Sabbath, but I love Priest.

At least one of those impromptu times that Halford sang for Sabbath was when RJD refused to perform in support of Ozzy.

Yeah boy till you what man, it's just like that dang old smoke on the water man... And fire in the sky.
I love both bands, I give Sabbath the edge for being more influential. I mean, they practically invented metal for cryin' out loud. Tough to beat that level of influence. Tony Iommi is amazing, Geezer is hugely influential. Ozzy, RJD, Bill Ward, Vinny Appice, love them all.
Priest took me longer to appreciate. The Sad Wings of Destiny album is now one of my favorites, along with the early Sabbath albums it ranks among the best 70s metal albums. And Halford, last I heard, can still crush with his vocals. The video below is from 2014 or so and it's as good as anything I've heard from them.
Also, never mind the haters. I love these threads. Anything that gets people talking about good bands is cool with me. Don't like it, your browser came with a "back" button, free with every purchase.

Even though both bands started pretty close to the same time, they just don’t seem to be a good comparison.
BS would maybe compare better with Zeppelin or Deep Purple
JP would seem to compare better to Iron Maiden or Motörhead.
That’s only my opinion, but as a write this I recall Ozzy & Lemmy wrote some songs together and Halford sang in Sabbath, so perhaps they overlap more than I think. It’s just that, in my mind at least, Sabbath seems to be much earlier than Priest, and I know they aren’t much at all.

I guess my vote would have to be for Grand Funk Railroad. That’s where my biggest bass influence came from….

Re: Black Sabbath - N.I.B. was the first bass line I ever learned, and their music was groundbreaking, and to me very inspiring. Bill Ward's feel is such a big part - that band GROOVED!

Speaking of Maiden, I loved them but don't listen to them at all anymore. But I do listen to Judas Priest and Sabbath. But actually I listen to Priest more often, so I voted for them.

Edited to add: I saw Priest live 3 times - twice on the Defenders of the Faith tour in Tokyo (Budokan & NHK Hall) and once much more recently touring after Firepower (which I think is an awesome album) - Black Sabbath only once early in the The End tour. Feel fortunate to have seen both!
Oh, and one more thing - this is one of my all-time favorite Priest tunes - came out in 2018 - I love this drummer! (Scott Travis - only joined in 1989 lol):

Recognize Butler and Sabbath for sure but I have to go with Judas Priest for being more consistent.
