Bob Glaub 5 is real!

Maybe I'm just seeing things wrong, but isn't the pole piece for the A string in the wrong position?
That's a Nordstrand pickup, Ken. Lakland hasn't yet developed a 5-string P pickup they're happy with.

There are a couple of BG5s floating around. We got to play one at the Lakland GTG at the end of May. Also, TBer "blondmix" ended up with the unfinished prototype and had it painted a trans orange. I've seen it in person, it's a beauty.

Yep, definitely wrong.

I think Sadowsky does it the same way on their P fives too. I know Yamaha and Fender but the A pole piece in the traditional location.

So does Sadowsky.

EDIT: Dang it! Roger beat me to it!!! Oh well, at least there's a picture of a beautiful Metro that will be mine SOON if my MTD sells.

Alleva-Coppolo P's have them in the 'right' position also.

I wonder what the deal is? I guess it makes a bit of sense with the Sadowsky, since that 'P' model is not really meant to do any sort of 'vintage' or 'accurate' P tone (i.e., it is a 'active modern updated design goal', and hence it 'is what it is'. I would have thought the 5 string passive Glaub would have been modeled as 'accurate' to the original 4 as possible.

Maybe it doesn't really impact the tone at all. I'm just curious as to the design decision.

I don't know. My old NYC PJ5, alder/rw, sounded exactly like a Pbass with the EQ flat and VTC rolled off and favoring the neck pickup only. Even moreso with Sadowsky Flats and a foam mute. Modern Jamerson IMO. Now, when you start to boost in the pre, its a different story.

The ability to get a solid Pbass sound AND nail a crisp modern tone was what made me love, and regret ever getting rid of, that bass.

That is one cool bass!

as MrMatt said, we have tried for months to get a Skyline BG5 LOG bass going with a CHI pickup. we need 30+ orders to make it happen......let me know if you are interested and are ready to put about $600 down and we can make it happen!!!!

PS - if you "need" a std P pickup to make it happen we can do that but we need to make it somewhat special to make it a special edition/limited run....

I will never let mine go.... The best of both worlds- Laklands killer B string with that P bass sound that sits so perfectly in a mix! I'll be buried with mine.

This one has the A coil on the bass side. Maybe the earlier pic is an early prototype? Or was put in backwards haha? Or blondmix switched his?

Either way, as RTL said, give me a 5 string duck and I'll one (more) broke bass player. Blocks/binding/matching headstock = ultimate sex machine.

Ive got one of those Nordy NP5's at home waiting to go on my DJ5.
The pics at the top of this thread are misleading. All the poll pieces are the same, its just the camera picked up the A string more than the others.

EDIT: Oh ok, i should have read all the messages first before stating the very obvious ;-). Im glad Dan has chosen the Nordy, makes me feel a bit happier that i did as well.

I would be up for that but being in the UK im a bit too far away and too impatient to wait 12 months or more for a bass:ninja:

Yes, that is "Vintage incorrect".
I've seen some Lulls that have it both correct and incorrect. Some early Fender P5 pups were incorrect.
As far as the Nordstrand P5 goes, there is a Yamaha 5 for sale on this site that has the Nordy P5 positioned vintage incorrect. The owner claims it was installed backwards.

Other than the 3 vs. 2 string field area, are the two bobbins wound any different? Would switching be a problem?

As far as the pickguard goes, it does look...strange.
The P pup also looks too close to the neck to me, but since Lakland 5 fingerboards are 22 fret (vs. Fender's traditional shorter 20) maybe that's what is making it look weird to me. :hmm:
