Bongo sounds great on A, D and G, terrible on E and B?

Is it so for the whole string (E and B) or just the open notes? I mean on the E string for ex. if you play A or B or whatever else, is it still bad?

No it seems to be a problem all over the neck. Haven't had time to call CS yet. I have some spare sets of strings so I'm gonna try putting an A string where the E is. That way I'll know for sure if it's a construction issue or not. A fella pays $1800 for a bass and can't get a reasonable sound across the tonal spectrum...

Make sure the pickups are at it proper height. About 3/16" below the B-string. If they are two low they will sound muddy.

I'd check that the slots on the nut are cut back leaving an angle toward the tuners.

As in, the side of the nut towards the neck is slightly higher than the side facing the tuners?

Where did you buy it? They should be your first responders.

I've noticed something similar on the B string

I've found that the B needs its action raised a bit and the touch is different (a bit more attack)

However, what I discovered recently is the Bridge Humbucker helps make the B string be more clear and respond quicker while the neck is opposite.

The neck gets more of a wooly, slow to bloom tone whereas the bridge gets a crisp, quick tone.

Try panning all the way to the Bridge pickup and report back
