Boom Bass Cabinets

I am disappointed to find out Boom brags about hi wattage ratings of their cabinets but turns out the ratings are Fake watts, not real RMS Watts. All manufacturers should disclose the true RMS ratings and not mislead us with useless Maximum ratings. So is a 1212 a 600 watt RMS cabinet?
 
What the RMS rating is doesn't matter all that much, because it doesn't tell you the frequency response, sensitivity, polar response or displacement limited SPL. Those are the factors that determine what you hear, not watts.
Agreed, but the real SPL (volume) that can be achieved is "RMS" power x sensitivity minus the difference in the large signal versus small signal sensitivity... or what works out to be power compression.

Not sure where you are getting your facts from? I own the 1215 Tank and I use a Walter Woods Blue Light 1200 Watt amp. This speaker can take all the amp can throw at it. I even ran the Woods at maximum volume when I first got the speaker and it was loud and articulate. I am pretty sure that the ratings are accurrate. My two cents. Not fake news - LOL

I got the ratings by emailing Drue Williams at the BBC company and he said it is Maximum Power rating. I was seriously on the edge of ordering a 1212. Not being RMS ratings ended my interest in this cab.

I wouldn't worry too much about that unless you were planning to push 1200W RMS into a relatively tiny cab. I have a 1215 and it does seem to be the most sound from a box its size. I've played a 1012, but not a 1212. The 1012 had a lot of sound too and after I boosted the bass a bit, was in the ballpark of the 1215. I still prefer the 1215, but it's a larger cab.

Sir hardly any company rates their cabinets on RMS ratings. The BBC Tank 1212 is a 1200 watt cabinet and I got my ratings from the woofer manufacturer. We have many customers running 2000 watts through their Tanks every day and it doesn't choke one bit.
The proof is in the live performance not just in paper

Most prosound woofers give two thermal power ratings, one that follows an Audio Engineering Society protocol, which ends up being a fairly conservative number, and one that is called "music power" or "program power" or "maximum power", depending on the company, and it's simply the AES power handling multiplied by two.

For instance, Faital Pro quotes both AES power handling and "maximum power handling", where the latter "is defined as 3 dB greater than nominal power".

Unfortunately the term "maximum power" could make you think that that's the maximum short-term power handling of the driver. Poor choice of words on Faital's part, when for all practical purposes, it actually means exactly the same thing as JBL and Eminence's "program power". And "program power" is not a "fake" number.

Some manufacturers use a "peak" power handling number that is twice the "program power". Imo THAT would be a "fake" number for a musical instrument cab.

I have a Faital woofer sitting on the shelf behind me as I type this. The sticker on the magnet says "1200w". From reading the spec sheet, I happen to know that's the "maximum power" rather than the "AES power", but it is HARDLY a "fake" number.

My point being, Drue is NOT using a "fake" power handling rating. It is not the most conservative rating, but there is nothing "fake" about it.

I would encourage you to lay aside your disagreement with the power handling protocol of Drue's marketing department, because I think it's distracting you from the creativity of Drue's engineering department.

Drue's marketing department tells us a 1212 Boom cabinet is rated at 1200 watts. I think most people would assume that is RMS and his marketing department chose not to tell us how they (or he) rated it. I was seriously about to order one and I emailed them to clarify if it was in RMS and they replied Maximum Power-glad I did not buy it because I would be very upset finding out after the fact!!! I was disappointed in finding this out and having to go through time to find out when it should have been disclosed. Yes there are lots of wattage ratings, maybe maximum watts, Fake watts and even dog watts, but to me RMS is the number I compare cabs at. Imagine buying a new car being told it has 200 horsepower then finding out it has 100 real horsepower? The industry should have some standards. I have no feud with Boom Bass, I just don't like the way they rate watts. Speaker manufacturers do provide different ratings, but cab manufacturers should use RMS and not misleading peak ratings that will destroy the speakers.

I would call your 1400 watt cabinet really a 600 to 700 watt cabinet in RMS watts. Pleased don't be pissed off at me, I just wanted to know the real specs and Boom's marketing does not specify how wattage was rated-just 1200 or 1400 watts which sounds cool. Glad you like your rig.
 
Bought a 1212 a few weeks ago and have done 6 gigs with it so far. Impressed so far. I work in a loud (12) piece band and had yet to find anything that could replace my 410. I'm not saying it's as loud/louder than my 410. Just that it keeps up with my volume needs, easily. I run my MB500 into it and for giggles one day dimed the amp with EQ at noon. The amp ran out of gas but the speaker didn't protest at all. It was very loud. Given that it's a sealed cab, and a rather small one for 2x12's I would guess that mechanical power handling is quite high, but efficiency probably not so much. But it definitely works.
