Borat Got a Beating!

I initialy wasn't going to post here, but after having seen the movie, I figured I should. Just as a warning, I don't consider myself a "comedic snob". I own Dodgeball, A Night at the Roxburry, and Wayne's World 1 & 2. But, I have to agree with mike_v_s.

If by "old" you mean "able to comprehend and appreciate humor whose punchline extends beyond phallicism and flatulence", you can count me in, too (did I really just agree with Lindfield?). That's d### and fart jokes for those of you whippersnappers without a dictionary in front of you or basic English classes behind you.

Mike

I honestly did not think this movie was funny. The only time I laughed is when he was at the rodeo saying that he wished that "Bush drink the blood of all men, women and children in Irak". That line was quite funny though. Otherwise, everything was just too predictable and childish. Yes, I said it, childish.

Bruce, do you not think Baron-Cohen's making a valid point, that political correctness in society is largely a shallow, hypocritical facade? And that bigotry is the preserve of the foolish?

Presenting it the way he does, to me, highlights how ridiculous bigotry is.

Yes, you're right, but if someone wasn't aware of all the hypocrisy and bigotry around them yet, then they need to open their eyes. The movie also demonstrates that Baron himself is a hypocrite, making fun of other cultures and exploiting poor run-down villages.

Perhaps you just don't get it, that's fine by me. Half the success behind Ali G is that it is a kind of inside joke that only younger people got, something that their parents wouldn't understand.
Please tell me you're kidding. His clever humor has slipped under the noses of those stuffy "adults"!!! We're too old to get it? Here that, guys? There is NO WAY in hell that you crusty and slow old timers will EVER get Cohen because his level of humor is far too advanced for your brain. Please go back to foraging for food and retirement benefits and leave all the real laughing to the same demographic that spends over half their time looking for a girl drunk enough to sleep with them.
The irony in your statement may be that you cannot, in fact, comprehend the humour (no typo, proper english).
Even more funny is that I used the traditional English spelling for "honor" as a joke earlier, and now here you are commenting on my inability to grasp humor.

I'll end this with the exact way it started: stop being so "young".

Mike

I think that movie's a joke, the man got what he deserved, and if that article reaches eastern europe it will bring laughter to millions of people.

The thing to understand, IMHO, is that eastern europe's culture is not something which should be taken so lightly and joked openly about. While I understand how opening minds to new humour and how the movie, for me, isn't such a big deal, I also know that it is a big deal for the people being made fun of in there. Cultures are different and some aren't as open minded as other just yet, and I dont think making such movies is going to help them be more open minded, its actually quite the contrary.

Thank you. This is along the lines of what I was trying to say.

Having lived in three countries, and travelled to 41, my perspective is this movie is offensive from a cultural perspective. My opinion. Not lookin down on the movie lovers. YMMV

(ok Mike...I'm back in)

How long has Kazakhstan been in Europe?

For what it's worth, the dig is not at Kazakhstan, it's at bigotry. We cannot fathom how an entire nation was so possessed to allow the persecution and genocide that occurred in Nazi Germany, but we see the relative ease Baron-Cohen had in getting an entire bar singing, "Throw the Jew down the well."

By appearing as a foreign presenter, he allows people to let down their guard, believing the footage will not be available to the US public. And let's face it, they're given every chance to realise he's not a genuine Kazakh reporter.

I apologize for sounding like a dick. And as I reread my posts, I honestly sounded like a major dick.
You said "dick" twice! You tryin' to be funny or what? You got sumpin' against the military? What's next, Captain Crunch? Colonel Corn? General Principle? Private Parts? Corporal Punishment? Sheesh! :rollno: Is that your idea of humour? I must be too old or the wrong colour. See, I'm tryin' to work on my english. I might need to git North of that Masonic-Dixie fence thingy to reckon rightly. I've only lived in Germany, Iran and France, plus a dozen or so bergs in the U.S., so I might seem kinda sheltered & unworldly. Please to excuse this peasant...

I need to go to a small, poor village where nobody speaks english and pay them each about $10.00 a day to call their women whores and get amputees to unknowingly wear dildoes on their stumps. Now THAT would be funny! No really! Don't you get it? I said, "my sister is the fifth, no fourth, best whore in this town." Hahaha, you dumb bitch. Learn english if you don't want to be dogged. Stupid whore. :spit: ...I already have a premise for the next movie. No, really. Check it out. Funny sh%t. We go to a mental institution and tell them we're doing a documentary on mental illness and then get the patients in private rooms and make them have sex with each other and animals. We could get them to pee on each other and even fart for the camera! Hahaha! Is that not cool? :hyper: Frickin' retards are funny. You could get them to do almost anything. Dumbasses... Hahaha... Cool. You don't think that's funny? You old fart. You probably don't enunciate aluminum properly either... :D Some people don't appreciate being the brunt of jokes and they might just kick your ass up one side of the street and down the other making you cry, "Momma." Now THAT'S funny. Right?

Err.. I bet I could've gone in there in my normal everyday clothes and got them to sing "I wanna make sweet love with my sister" so long as it had a nice country lilt to it. Drunk bargoers are not exactly the most discriminating audience and they definitely weren't there for a history lesson.

Way to show those rednecks a thing or two Borat.:rollno:

That little kid that got girls to sign a petition against suffrage is more clever than Sacha.

I think you meant ". . . and have them make sexy time with each others and make romantic explosion on animals. . ."

Brilliant. That is some good material. They should hire you as a writer.:D

Seriously though, I don't think Borat is anything new or clever.

Ok folks. I'm going to lighten up. I apologize for sounding like a dick. And as I reread my posts, I honestly sounded like a major dick. Apologies.

My round of beers on everyone. Sincerest apologies.

Keep in mind that on TB, the sarcasm font automatically clicks on before you begin to post. Happens all the time here.
:D No worries.

As far as Borat misrepresenting the 'majority' of Americans, I hate to say, but ignorance FAR outweighs Knowledge and Wisdom in this country. More obvious in the Midwest. And the ranks of 'culturally' aware and universally-minded people in this country is a MINORITY.
