That becomes complicated real quick when you have to start using MIDI to control the SA comp (oh, and the EQ2 you added to your board while I was typing..). Possible, but if you look at such a patch after 3 months it's somewhat of a puzzle (at least that's my experience when I had MIDI>drummachine >synth setups). But maybe that won't be a problem since you/we change patches every week :D. Also the Core + SA EQ2 + SA Atlas is the ultimate setup this week. Next week you will find an ultimate pre-amp to add :D. Or one of those SA Drives .

My DIY Pedalboard Nice!!! (edit: link says 'My' .. it's not mine!)

With serious dirt imo/ime it's rather important to have some comp in front of the dirt. Not too much to lose dynamics but enough to make it ..uh..compact and powerful.

Haha I’m perfectly aware I’ll never be happy but that setup is the ultimate setup for this weeks problems
Yeah I found dirt works best sandwiched between compression (not necessarily immediately). If they had some kind of configurable multiband compressor on the gt that’d help loads. It’s amazing how quickly the fx blocks disappear as soon as you start trying to have a high/low split signal path.

Yes the blocks disappear real quick with dual paths.

I tried the X-BASS with a clean/low blend, it just gets louder in the low end...
I tried the X-BASS with a dirt/high blend, it just gets louder in the high end...

Apparently this distortion has exactly the mix and high/low processing how I like it! I could do a high/low split and have a X-BASS in both paths but compress them differently, but I feel that would overcomplicate things and would make changes too small to be worthwhile. (ok I will try it anyhow because I like overcomplicating things, at least in an experiment..)

That’s the spirit!!! yeah I really need to spend more time with the X-Bass, I’ll leave it out of splits too!

Just checking something. The X Bass Comp is a MDP effect, which is Bosses take on Multi-band Processing, same as the X Drive Bass, etc?

BOSS - MDP Deep Dive

Interesting read! So, what I get from this, MDP is trying to create something 'new' that is pleasing instead of digitally recreating something 'old and familiar' that has been proven to be pleasing. A bold move in guitar land, now I understand why Boss isn't very well appreciated.

Stupid me has not tried the X-DRIVE BASS pre-amp...(also MDP stuff)

Btw. the stuff in the 'pre-amp' blocks actually also include the power-amp (manual: "This is an amp that uses Boss's proprietary cutting-edge AIRD....between all parts that affect the sound.)

I’ve got this measuring/utility app that illustrates in graph form, the amount of dynamic range in an audio file. The AIRD Amps show quite a bit of compression when Gain, SAG, Resonance are set high.

Some more pink noise testing. A comparison of the SAG and Resonance settings in the AIRD Amp. The graph under the settings show how much the Dynamic Range has been reduced. The top settings have more reduced Dynamic Range than the bottom. So basically there's some compression going on with the SAG setting, which will be the power amp compression, and the Resonance is providing a type of character voicing?

This is one example of a template I've been working on. The image shows a rough explanation of the effects order. This isn't a hard and fast rules based template, blocks can be moved around. Like compression, which can either be pre or post 1/2 Ch Gain stage for example. For me, its been important to understand overall what the patch should look like in terms of effects order, then what it sounds like when I start to construct a patch. this is where having a template to work from has been very useful.

Hmm, a two stage noisegate contraption. Interesting, maybe this has the same advantages as a two stage compression setup (one pre and one post drive)? Nice, overcomplicating things, isn't that what we all like here? I checked his channel, he has a series of Boss GT1k tutorials, maybe there's more creative programming to be found.

Have been trying out SAG and RESONANCE settings. At home. Maybe it's subtle and only noticeable at high volumes? Or maybe my setup makes these parameters indistinguishable? I would like to hear some experiences with these parameters, maybe then I can put them to use.

It’s definitely doing something from my testing, but yeah, it’s a very subtle effect. I can’t hear much, could be a feel thing. I’ve decide to leave the two settings at 0. Seems to be the half way point. But there’s a relationship between the Gain, SAG, and Resonance. Could be more useful to guitarists for that high gain tube sound.

Ah, that makes sense! I use Gain at 40 with the Gain Switch at LOW. Maybe indeed it starts to work noticeable at higher gains. If it is a guitarists 'feel' thing it will be too subtle for my ears haha!

I think so from watching stuff on YouTube, all the guitarists seem to put a big focus on Gain Switch settings. On bass I’m only ever using low/mid and gain between 25-60 really.

Doing the same thing but with a fixed gain setting and using each Gain Switch setting level matched would be interesting. Wonder if the compression pattern changes.
