Boss GT-10B

so I've had this board for quite some time, and I really like it. but it seems I have a hard time taming it. any of you guys use it live too? I use mine, but I usually find too big a difference in sound from my bass in the different patches.

I have been considering putting the pedal in manual mode and use each switch as a stompbox pedal instead.

I play a varity songs, some where I need an almost synthy sound and others where I like a way more "organic" approach. mostly I love me some grindy tone though. I got a VT pedal coupled with it.

I've set it up as follows

active bass into GT10B - VT pedal - instrument in on my markbass littlemark II. I'm kinda worried that I actually have 4 preamps going here... problem is that I really like the preamps both in my bass, VT and LMII. not so sure about the one in the GT10B. although tamed correctly it might be pretty good.

I've been thinking about connecting the GT10B to my sr on my LMII - but wouldn't that bypass my preamp there ? and would this be a good idea? also putting the VT bass in the S/R of the GT10B. tried that but I might have set it up wrong, because I didn't like the tone.

now I pretty much use the VT pedal as an "always on" pedal, which might not be the best way.

Any ideas?

maybe some stories ( or videos) on how you work your board, and why.

problem with this board is too many options! :P

I know I know I know.... "do what you think sound best" but I need some inspiration to achieve a better sound. Fire away

Hello everybody. I'm new to this forum and a new gt10b user. Just bought mine used. Looks perfect, but the (mono) out and phones out have really low output and hiss and cracks. The xlr works oke, but very hot.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there a master volume inside somewhere?
Using a stingray bass into the input and from the gt10b to a yamaha mixer/amp.

Hope someone can help,

Hey Juan:

Congrats. The GT10B is a pretty awesome machine. If you haven't already done so, you should download the manual here.

The XLR output volume can definitely be turned down. As for the low output levels from the 1/4 inch jacks, there are several different controls that could be tweaked to improve the output.

Consider backing up all the patches with Gumtown's floorboard editor or something, then doing a factory reset. Who knows what settings the previous user applied? Guitar friend bought a used GT-6 that was ALL messed up. Input gain +12, EXP switch would turn on/off if you barely bumped it which was a problem when you were trying to wah-wah, etc. Crazy master EQ settings. Was easier to factory reset and build from the ground up.

Thanx for the quick advise.
First thing I did when I got it in the mail was doing a factory reset (system). Also have the original (dutch) manual. Found out how to lower the xlr output, but the cracks, hiss and low output level remain....
...worst case scenario, I'll have to return it. (but hope not!)

Sorry if this has been covered already - I searched the thread for "warranty" and "coverage" but nothing came up. I also searched online and can't find anything specifically stating what the warranty is. I bought my pedalboard in April of last year. When I power it up the Boss logo appears, then it powers off, then comes immediately back on. It does this constantly, so clearly I need some warranty service. When searching online it says Boss products are either warranted for 1 or 5 years. Can anyone confirm the warranty for the GT-10B? Thanks in advance.

Did you try it with another power supply?

When you say power supply are you talking about the adaptor that came with the pedalboard, or the outlet/power strip? I've tried multiple outlets, but not a new adaptor.

I assumed it was the pedalboard as it started developing problems after I got caught in the pouring rain and the case absorbed a lot of water. First the expression pedal started activating itself at random intervals, then the pedalboard failed to fully boot up...

I'm assuming that would void your warranty right there, assuming there was any left. I'd try airing the board out. Pull the bottom panel off the chassis, make sure it's totally dry.

I did that when this happened about 3 months ago. Let it sit for a couple months since I didn't want to chance it failing on me, and when I tried to fire it back up it failed to fully boot. If it had a 5 year warranty I figured I'd give it a shot - worst case scenario they charge me for an out of warranty eval and send it back. If it only had a 1 year warranty, however, I figured I'd just chalk it up to experience.

Sucks - when it happened I was walking to my car and the sky just opened up. Soaked right through my clothes and the Boss case in seconds. D*mn Florida weather. :(

I feel for you man ... I've had gear ruined this way before as well .. sux bigtime.

these days I put my GT10b in a clear bag when at a outdoor gig & it looks rainy ... or at corporate events where drinks invariably end up too close to for comfort.

I played a wedding recently & a brides maid walked up to talk to the lead singer .. as she walked by she dropped a piece of cherry pie on my GT10b ... It was after that I started bagging it at those kind of gigs.

That sounds like a great preventative step to take. Do you have any pics? What kind of bag did you use? I assume something that fits it pretty tightly and you just cut ventilation holes in it?

If you are at the stage where you have nothing to lose.
I would strip down the GT-10B and LIGHTLY spray the circuit boards and buttons with the likes of a marine formula CRC 666 penetrating oil and used a small stiff brush to clean between the legs of any corroded looking components. But be careful not to spray the lcd display.

Its a bag that a monitor speaker came wrapped in inside the box.

It doesn't fit super tight & I can't read the display that well ... but I don't really read it anyway at this point.

This thread got me thinking & I remembered I have some suran wrap like stuff that is made to wrap pallets, it is really thin but strong as hell & its clear ... I have a roll at work and it never occurred to me to use it for something like this but I will now.

I also keep a bag with me at all gigs that fits over my whole rig ... just in case

Rig= 6 space rack, 410 cab, 118 cab

I've never had any crackling or low output problems. One possibility is that the output jack is loose. Definitely worth checking. If all of your instrument cables and your guitar are known to be working properly then I have no other suggestions.

I think you suggested that you could get your money back which may be appropriate.

Thanks again! I'm returning it. Could operate it using xlr to jack cable, but paid a lot of money for it, and want it to ve in good order...
Ps. Tried about five different cables, the left and right output, two basses, two amps, the phones output.....

I think I'll give up!

Thanks again,

New discovery:

* Pick ANY drive effect
* Effect = 0, Direct = 6, Bottom = 50 or less depending on if it chuffs your downstream effects and amp

Gives you a very DOD FX25 with no sensitivity/range like tone. You're leveraging the Bottom feature as a LPF of sorts. Actually rolls of a little too much of the high end stuff, but direct adds too much back in. I'm sure you could get even closer with layering EQ and other stuff.

Another way to get a similar tone is using FX1/2 LPF TOUCH WAH with Sens=0 Freq=6 or so and Peak=0, then adjust volume so it doesn't clip downstream gear. Different flavor than using the Drive effect or DOD FX25 but still a LPF type sound.
