Boss GT-10B

I think you maybe a little disappointed into your Midi venture.
The GT-10B does not "chain" midi events through, the GT-10B either reads midi in, or sends midi control data out, a midi device requires a "midi thru" port to chain data.
The GT-10B is also only and efffects processor, midi song files are of no use for it as it does not contain a midi sound generator like a keyboard.
The GT-10B midi is only of use for patch data and realtime control of GT-10B parameters, continuous controller data (cc#) send or return, and patch change send or receive.
The GT-10B USB does contain midi as well as audio, so in your computer apps, the GT-10B is seen as a midi device (with the USB drivers installed) as well as an audio soundcard.
BUT... the GT-10B midi ports are disabled while the USB midi is in use, it's one or the other.
I have used the GT-10B as an audio and midi interface to play bass >> computer pitch to midi program >> computer midi sound/tone generator >>> GT-10B audio output.

I have never used more than one patch per song, the GT-10B's Assigns are where the power of the GT is.

Thanks for the input!
:-)
I won't be disappointed in my MIDI venture, I'm not looking for the GT-10B to play sounds from the keyboard.
I'm hoping that Ableton Live will be able to control patches & parameters of the GT-10B by using the Assigns in Ableton to trigger patch changes in the GT-10B during song playback and while recording of the bass parts.
That would only be icing on the cake as the MAIN reason I am getting an MPK61 (and into MIDI) is to get back into playing keyboards (have played since I was about 5 years old) and add the modern day power of MIDI and DAW to music projects with friends in other parts of the world.
I was not really thinking that the MIDI sounds could be played through the GT-10B, although, the audio can be "re-amped" through GT-10B filters after recording, but it's not the same.
The MPK61 also doesn't play any sound by itself.
That is what the DAW is for.
The keyboard only tells the DAW what to do.
It's not a synth, which was what my last keyboard was (a decent Yamaha music station).
*I only state it like that so you know that I know those limitations of MIDI, AND so you who actually have the first hand knowledge can kind of make sure I am on the right track with what I think I know. If that makes sense. :-)
The MIDI keyboards & MPC devices only tell the software what to play back and how to do it.
The GR55 & GK-3B (etc) are actual MIDI playback device & controller.
In this case, the MIDI playback device is my Computer (using Abletone Live) and the controller is the MPK61.
I'm just trying to figure out where the GT-10B can fit into it all.
So not trying to be snarky.
Just want to make sure I'm not stating things incorrectly about what my ultimate expectations are :-)
All I really want, if they can be used together at all (well, beyond adding keyboards to our sound), is relieving me of my need to remember where a patch is in the GT10B while playing bass to one of our songs.
And for live performances, if all I got out of the MIDI control from/to the GT-10B is using unused foot switches for changing various parameters in Ableton Live while playing the keyboard (or just foot-controlled Start/Stop of Playback and Record functionality), and allowing Ableton Live to change patches for me automatically while playing along on bass to music created with Ableton, I'd be very happy.
If all I needed was one patch per song, I wouldn't bother with a GT-10B (and I say that with a great amount of reverence to the device. It is amazing. I'm a prog rocker so, I am in love), but the music we play is wide ranging, and we are a 3 piece, so I try to help fill out the sound with FX where appropriate.
So 6 or more patch changes per song is not uncommon. Heck, that many patch changes can happen in as many measures. ;-) Well, not that many... yet... ;-)
I have until the end of the year to get it figured out a bit better, so I appreciate the info!
And good to know about the USB MIDI or standard MIDI at one time on the GT-10B.
I did not plan on even trying to use both, but always good to know ahead of time if something is not going to work (like on the MPK61: the keyboard itself runs off of BUS power from the USB of the computer it's attached to, but you need the optional AC power adapter if you want to send/recieve MIDI to other devices through the regular MIDI ports)
Anything I am able to learn about incorporating the GT-10B into this upcoming scheme will be shared here in case others are thinking of doing the same.
Time to read, re-read, and re-re-read the MIDI section of the GT-10B manual, and do more internet research.
Thanks again for the help!
:-)

Ok here goes: I got a GT10B today (for testing). I have played with it for a few hours and alltough I can get some very nice synths etc I am not very impressed with overdrives and distortions they seem kind of slow and lack "bite" now i realize its a block that needs weeks of research to open all of its doors and stashes but basically what I am asking is - does anyone know if there are any Metal/Stoner/Heavy Rock samples of GT10B somewhere? All I can find on youtube is either funk, slap or syth-orgies.

I am looking for something that can give me all I could want for all sorts of grit and occasionally more since I do not want to play with 1 tone all the time - alltough my analog chain sounds nice with my Aria Pro Avante 6.

I also have one VOX Tonelab ST here which is awesome with its valve circuit but since its a guitar block it lacks bottom.

Since I like the valve maybe I should look into Zoom B9.1UT since it has a valve and I do like valve tones.

Thanks for the help :)

Until now I have used "Russian Green PI" and whatever my "Markbass Little Rocker 500" can do.

Well, look at all presets. There are some with very heay distotion and overdrive. o don't remember where.

There is a problem with digitech and zoom. All sounds will be with Digitech and Zoom. Is digitalized to the. Most. So, is a choice. If you have a cheap 10 bucks bass and a crapy amp, it will sound like zoom and digitech. If you have a 200.000 marshall wall and a 15.000 gibson Les Paul, it will sund also like Zoom or digitech.

Hi, if someone/anyone could answer this question it would be orgasmic, not to sound overboard but lol been trying to find a solution all day, and found zero, so....:

Is it possible to select whatever patch I want using the "Number pedals 1-4"? And with the "CTL (control) pedals 1 and 2" as well????

Like it it would be great if I could make it so that every time I press "number pedal 1", "hip/hop dub" always comes on screen, and every time I press "CTL pedal 1" for example, "darksideofthesun" automatically comes on screen, and you probably get the idea.

Is this possible??? Cause if so I need a detailed answer please asap cause it would make my work flow SO much faster and easier.

(if an very similar question was already asked, I am very sorry and please redirect me to where the answer can be found.)

To my knowledge you cannot use CTRL1/2/3/4 or EXP 1/2 to bop to specific patches. But you can use them for Patch Increase/Decrease or Bank Increase/Decrease via assigns.

If you want a specific pedal, like NUM1 to always open a specific patch regardless of the bank you're in the best thing to do would be to use the Librarian to copy said patch to location #1 in each and every bank. And repeat for any other patches you'd like to do that with. Noting that you only have 4 NUM pedals to recall patches with so if you did that with all 4 then all your banks would be identical. :)

Note that if you edit just one of those patches it would NOT change all of them. You'd have to remember which one you changed then use the Librarian to copy it to all other locations.

That way of using the GT-10B would seriously under utilise it's capabilities to limit the whole thing to only 6 sounds. It would be like having a 400 page book and replacing all the pages with the first 6.
There are many ways to use the GT-10B, it is highly programmable.
You could set the GT-10B to "manual mode' and use the bank up/down pedals to switch between 4 favourite patches in a bank, and use the rest of the pedals to switch individual effects on/off, much like a stompbox pedalboard.

Can you emphasis on the bold part???? In manual mode, holy sh*t balls, the flexibility is staggering! But I`m not how to use the bank up/down buttons to do such a thing:(

WAIT HOLY SH*T!!! The CTL pedals can be turned to so many options with "pedal fx", and didn`t realize at all till now (sorry, noob here lol) that every patch is set to a bank consisting of 4 different patches.

assigning the "BnkInc/Bnkdec" and "NumInc/Numdec" to either of the up/down bank pedals, or NUM pedals can allow me to get to my favorite patches WAY quicker than my original idea!!!!

Alot to wrap my head around now, but THANK YOU SO much. BTW Is there a way to make it so that I can hold down a pedal when in "BnkInc/Bnkdec-NumInc/Numdec" mode, so that it fast forwards or rewinds quickly to a different patch instead of me having to continuously press the pedal???

Also when Im in ableton, I use the boss gt10B with my mouth (odd I know), and not surprisingly when I`m dropping delirious basslines, the volume peaks alot in the software, drowning out other sounds. Its connected to my computer with wires from the SUB OUTPUT of the gt10b, so should just finding the sweet spot in the "level" of the sub output help with that, or would I have to play around more with the sub limiter/compressor so the sound doesn`t peak in ableton???

That is one thing it won't do, only the dial on the GT-10B can do that, or some sort of external midi controller.

The GT-10B Sub outputs can get quite loud, i remember mine being set down to 25 for a 'normal' level. And the Sub level trim is set to -10dB and not +4dB.

Another interesting feature i use to switch the tuner on, is to use a setting called "System number pedal" which iset to "tuner", it allows the tuner to be engaged if you press the patch pedal of the same patch you are on.

You should spend some time reading the many, many pages of posts in this thread. Many of the questions you're asking have been asked and answered. Plus a ton of questions you haven't thought of yet, they'll give you some ideas.

The manual can be daunting to just sit and read, I personally would review the assigns section and system section, then use it as a go-to reference when you have questions. Assigns are where a ton of the power of the unit is, so hone your skills with that section for sure.

Go get Gumtown's floorboard editor, it'll make everything so much easier and much more visual for you. In particular, it'll show you when there's assigns enabled as having some enabled and not knowing it will surely cause you confusion.

Gotcha. And I have actually been reading the manual, but since I`ve only been trying to create music for like 20 months or something, the manual aids me more when I`m discussing with those who know whats up lol but in the future I`ll read it more and flip through the last few pages of this thread more before asking a question.

Thanks for your answers man again, they`ve helped so much its unreal. But I gotta ask (sorry if the answer is like eye rollingly simple lol) what exactly do you mean by the bold part?? When I`m in the "sub out" section there is only a "level" setting, no sub level trim or options for those db settings aren`t there.

I'm still not sure what it is you're fixing. :) Patch volume is saved whenever you write the patch.

The only way output volume can change is if you specifically change it. For example, if there's an assign that's enabling an effect or volume change, or if you happen to be running a different instrument in (with different output levels which may result in different GT-10B output levels), or if you set the master output knob higher though that would affect everything globally.
