Botched Order from a Major Internet Retailer

I had a similar thing happen not long ago. Charged a flight through Air France on my Capital One card via their site. Realized I misspelled a name and called back to have it correctly. Rep on the phone said it was taken care of and she corrected the name mistake (my fault)..
While I am usually pretty anal when it comes to monitoring my cards, I hadn't for a little while when I noticed the flight was charged twice and never refunded. They cancelled the first flight and recharged the card for a second flight, but then never gave me a refund. Many calls to Air France and had been told many times I would get a refund and it never happened. Charge sat on my account for 3 weeks while incurring overdraft fees and interest charges.
Fast forward, after demanding to talk to a manager on my last call, the manager called Capital One while I was on the phone to get the refund authorized. Capital One removed the charge and credited me back for any interest and fees that had posted for this amount that was supposed to never be charge.

+1 for Capital One.. -Eleventybillion for Air France! :scowl:

I am wondering if there is a misunderstanding between an authorization and a charge? Authorizations happen right away. Charges happen after a clearing process. Most companies cannot reverse authorizations. They simply fall off after not being matched to a charge in the next few days.

Any time a charge is for more than 25% of your checking account balance, it may be worth considering using a credit card instead. That way double processing and other common errors won't freeze you out of your cash for a few days.

+1

I had a branch manager at a bank I used to take deposits to for work all the time once tell me they made enough off overdraft fees alone to operate the whole branch. Don't really know if that's true but considering how some people operate, it just might be.:D

ABSOLUTELY TRUE - a sad state of affairs that our major banks prey and profit on the failure of their customers. They have worked closely with legislators to allow this.

That particular department I worked in, there were 3 locations, each with between 75 and 120 people, and our daily "goals" were in the 10k range. It really rather damaged my faith in humanity. It's quite literally the job where I decided that having a job where I was happy was more important than not living under a bridge.

USE LOCAL BANKS.

I am sorry about your situation, but based on my experiences with MF (several bad ones, ALL rectified to my satisfaction after much work) and my experience with call centers (work experience over 8 years), I feel I can safely say that you need to really freak out to get anything done.

I refuse to be treated poorly by anyone AND I am a world class @$$hat / profanity enthusiast - I get it done on the phone.

You must escalate the issue until you have someone with authority on the phone (above posts are right - the first few people will not be able to do what you are asking, and probably will not work for MF) and make it clear that not fixing the issue will: 1) result in the loss of immediate and future revenues 2) result in a BBB report 3) result in a well documented letter to corporate including their name and the dollar amounts that this fubar will cause them. It may not be their policy to do what you are asking, but MF absolutely CAN issue you a credit at anytime, so you need to sell it to them that it is the right course of action as it is in their best interest to do so.

Since you already started the fight, maybe aim at corporate next - if you are still interested in getting things right.

If you want specific strategies, PM me.

As a policy, no. As a reality, almost always yes, they do. I just got a set of drum bags through Sweetwater as a price match. I called my guy and asked, he said sure. Saved $20. I don't expect them to loose money, but if they can match they will. They do for me anyway.

Yeah, they literally assign a sales rep to you, and those dudes actually work for their sales. I bought a book a few months ago and had an email from "my" sales guy asking how it was. It was real too, not a copy/paste thing or an automated checkup.

The $2600 is the mistake right? Call your bank immediately. It was an unauthorized charge.

+1. This would be my solution. I had this same problem just a short timer ago with unauthorized charges against my debit card. Usually the merchant will make it good with the bank but in my case they just gave them the same runaround they gave me. First it was a legit charge and when I proved it wasn't then it was your check's in the mail, then the company was sold, ad nauseum.

Three months later when even my bank couldn't make sense of it they credited my account for the unauthorized charge. No overdrafts so I didn't to worry about that.

You shouldn't charged an overdraft fee for an unauthorized charge but if your bank won't credit the overdraft fees I would sure make MF know they need to reimburse you for them.

What happened is a shame. I have never had a problem with them when I've ordered on line or gotten a rep who knew his products. Unfortunately they have some lady reps who don't know a pick from a pickguard and they can easily mess up data entry you wouldn't. They're a good company and I'd ask them to make it right for you.

I need to vent...

Well, shortly afterward, I look at my bank app to find out that there are THREE transactions from Musicians Friend---

Is it me or is this outrageous????

O.K. The first person I talked to in customer service told me debit cards were not accepted. Wrong info! Debit cards issued by all the major credit card companies are accepted.(Thanks Russell and JdoubleH).

Second customer service rep at Musiciansfriend doubled checked and Bank APP is NOT accepted!

I'm fairly certain by mentioning a "bank app" the OP was referring to launching the bank app on his phone to view transaction history on his account.
